Just printed boarding passes!!

Aloha!

Tomorrow early morning flight from Boston arriving evening in Kauai (5 hours sitting in LAX - yikes)!! We%26#39;ve been keeping an eye on the weather (thinking of our neighbor from Avon, MA weather updates on the forum this past week) and looks like a fine week coming up for us. Thanks everyone - both official Kauai experts and others - for your help with our planning. Now, back to packing and repacking and seeing how much I can sneek into my husband%26#39;s suitcase.

Mahalo!

Just printed boarding passes!!

have a safe and wonderful trip

Just printed boarding passes!!

Sounds like you are excited and you should be. Have a wonderful time and don%26#39;t forget to smell the plumeria!

Very jealous. It will be memorable. Enjoy!

I am so jealous! I got excited a little early and now have no idea how I will get through the next three week of work! But...I am just glad to be working in these economic times so I will try and remember that!

I have been watching the weather...looks like a good week for sure. Have a ton of fun!! We go in 8 sleeps! Can%26#39;t wait! It%26#39;s funny, my days just seem to fly by now--I want everything to slow down. Could that be age talking??

I%26#39;m soooooo jealous!

Have a great time and please have a Mai Tai for us.

Aloha. Enjoy. Don%26#39;t forget the trip report.

Have a fantastic time. I wish we were on our way there but we had out trip already this year.

Has anyone been to Paul Comeau's condos?

Just found this place on-line. Is it good? Is it clean?

Has anyone been to Paul Comeau's condos?

The place you are talking about is a condominium complex called Pat%26#39;s at Punal%26#39;uu. The condos there are all independently owned and operated with about 1/3 of the condos belonging to full time residents, 1/3 long term rentals and 1/3 short term rentals. Paul Comeau is one of many different owners who rent out condos at the Complex.

My husband and I rented a unit in 2007 and are returning in less than 3 weeks. Although we have not rented from this particular owner, there are many great units available. I%26#39;m sure that someone here on trip advisor can give a review of one of his units, but the complex itself is uncrowded and has a great beach. I love it there.

Here is a message thread all about Pat%26#39;s at Punaluu.

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g29222-i37-k241192…

If you would like to look at other condos for comparison, take a look at the website Vacation Rentals by Owner www.vrbo.com

There are a ton of listings under Punal%26#39;uu: vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/…a3083 and this is where I have found both my rental units.

Advice needed. If you had two days . . .

We are traveling to Maui next month. We are staying at the Maui Marriott Ocean Club in Ka%26#39;anapali on a timeshare trade. Our week starts Sunday, but we decided to fly in to Kahului on Friday in the late afternoon/early evening due to flight times, etc.

Originally, we thought we would stay overnight somewhere near the airport and head to Hana Saturday morning, stay the night there, and then go to Ka%26#39;anapali on Sunday. Come to find out, lodging is scarce in Hana, especially for a one night weekend stay. Aside from that, our teenage daughters are balking at the long drive and they hate hiking, so DH and I are thinking of saving Hana for a future visit when it is just the two of us.

Now, we are thinking of a couple of other scenarios: 1) Stay at a reasonably priced hotel in Kahului Friday night and drive north on Saturday checking out the sights and maybe staying in Kapalua for the night, or 2) Driving to Kihei or Wailea Friday night, staying for two nights, and check out that area.

Which of these scenarios would you recommend or do you have another suggestion? What would you do if you had 2 days to get from Kahului to Ka%26#39;anapali? FYI, our daughters are 17 and 20, and don%26#39;t like to hike, LOL.

Advice needed. If you had two days . . .

For two nights (with Hana vetoed) try a different part of the island than you will be staying for the rest of your visit.

I%26#39;d give Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei a call. They have some ';suites'; one king with a sleeper sofa. Not a 5 star but very adaquate. We use them alot for extra nights like you need. Since whale season is almost over you might get a great price. You can walk across the street to Kam I Beach

Best Western in Kihei is another place...on a beautiful beach.

You can visit some of the wonderful South Maui Beaches, drive down to the end of the road to La Perouse Bay..beautiful only a 40 min ride. Stop at Big Beach..be careful if the waves are up..shore break is rough. You won%26#39;t have anything like Big Beach on the West side. Also the 5 star resorts are on the way to Big Beach.

SeaWatch, at the Wailea Golf course, has a wonderful and reasonable Breakfasr/lunch with a killer view.

Advice needed. If you had two days . . .

Just wanted to add that we would like to keep lodging reasonable for these two nights. We will have enough luxury when we get to the Marriott.

I posted before I saw your reply Barefoot. You appear to have read my mind though. Thanks. I%26#39;ll check out your suggestions. It does make sense to go to a different part of the island. We could make a day trip out of Kapalua from Ka%26#39;anapali, and we could always drive around that way to get to the airport when we leave for a change of scenery, or is that a lot longer than it looks on a map?

valleykat, I%26#39;ve always gotten better rates than those posted on their website when I call. Also better than third party sites. 1800.895.6284. Their prices drop after the whales leave.

don%26#39;t have the number for Best Western.

Don%26#39;t ever go from the airport to Kapalua on that norther road. you will be cliff side with no guard rail on one lane...backing up to a wider spot for local traffic to squeeze past you. Some folks like to drive from Kapalua to Kahului but not many..

Kapalua to mm 38.5 to see the Blow Hole is ok.Just turn around and go back to Kapalua.

Have a great trip.

Thanks again Barefoot. That is the kind of advice I am looking for. Very helpful.

Valleykat there are alot of condos that rent between the two hotels. Usually they have 3 night minimums. sometimes they will have a two night slot open and just charge extra for a cleaning fee.

www.wizardpub.com take look at South Maui between Maui coast and Best Western. Places are renting below rack rates. You might can get a one bed room with a sofa bed less than the hotel room.

Also look on the left of the main page at Vacation rentals..

Maui Hotels on the left list the condos rentals plus the three hotels for the Kehei area.. (I would think twice, twice(not a typo) before staying at the Maui Lu Hotel)

There aren%26#39;t a lot of hotels in Kihei, Barefoot is giving you great advice!

A couple of other options for finding a condo for only two nights - Aston Resorts (the Maui Banyan) which is run like a hotel with condos %26amp; has no minimum, AliiResorts, Bello Realty, and Hale Pau Hana - even if they post a minimum on the website I would suggest calling them as it never hurts to ask.

Don%26#39;t stay in Kahului- there just isn%26#39;t anywhere decent at all and it will be very frustrating not having a beach access.

If your daughters are snarky about the drive to Hana, don%26#39;t make them do it. Save it for some time when you can enjoy a lovely trip as a couple.

Try the Maui Prince in Makena, at the south end of the island. Great beach, nice mellow hotel, will give you an entirely different view from Kaanapali.

(There is also an upscale shopping mall in Wailea).

Thanks LesRose and Isplash.

I know Isplash doesn%26#39;t recommend staying in Kahului, but we are not getting in until 5:15 PM. By the time we get our car rental and get something to eat, we will be ready to crash at our hotel since we will be on CA time, so Friday night%26#39;s lodging isn%26#39;t too important. A friend mentioned Maui Seaside hotel. The reason I am entertaining the idea of staying in Kahului is because I am thinking about driving up to the crater on Saturday morning for the sunrise. What do you think of that? Since our bodies will still be on CA time, I may be able to get the girls up that early. They will probably frown at the idea, but get over it once they see the beauty of it all.

If we were to do that, what would be the most logical place for Sat. night%26#39;s lodging, given that we will be in West Maui on Sunday?

I am still considering south Maui, but I wondered what you all thought about working the crater in. If we are going to do it, it makes sense to do it coming from Kahului.

  • Groceries

We will be vacationing in Kauai next week and am wondering which is the most economical place to buy groceries - Foodland, Big Save or Safeway?

    Groceries

All three are pretty pricey, but my experience has been, from least to most expensive:

Safeway, then Big Save, then Foodland

I would say Foodland and Big Save are fairly close though. It also depends on where you do your grocery shopping. Foodland in Princeville is a bit more expensive than Foodland in Kapaa.

    Groceries

Can I jump in this thread - we are coming soon and planning to shop at Costco for sure and can someone refresh my memory - is Kmart in the same shopping center as Costco?

Foodland and Safeway both have their weekly flyers online. We cook most of our meals so I look at the specials right before we leave. Gives me a good idea for meal planning. Make sure you sign up for the club cards too - substantial savings (can be done at the store).

    3Chihuahuas

Pretty much so. Costco is across the road from where Kmart is located.

Oh yes, thanks 3Chihuahuas for the reminder. Safeway and Foodland have discounts cards, and you will definitely want to get those to save big $$$. You can get both at the store as you%26#39;re checking out.

Regarding Costco- We are going to Kauai for 10 days in June. I am concerned that I will be over buying at Costco. We are a family of four. I don%26#39;t think we could finish off a package of chicken breasts, for instance. Are there particular food items that are better purchased at Costco? I live near a Costco and shop there frequently. I don%26#39;t think I go through many items in 10 days because the quantities are so huge.

    Rene%26#39;

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

    ';is Kmart in the same shopping center as Costco?';

No, Costco is in the ';Big Box'; Shopping Area with Home Depot that is across the road in the old Kukui Grove Pavillion area - if you drive behind K-Mart you won%26#39;t be able to miss it.

I shop at Costco and there are only 2 of us in our hale - I don%26#39;t like to buy in huge bulk unless it is something I know will last forever. There are lots of things you can get at Costco that are not in huge quantities - their $5.00 bar-be-qued chicken is very popular - I%26#39;ve purchased their mahi and ahi fish filets there as well as crab and ahi poke.

I love their take and bake pizzas as well. You can buy single pineapples and certain other types of fruit as well.

While certainly they are known for their ';bulk'; items, not everything is that way.

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

Star Market is in the same shopping center as K-Mart. We like this store since they have a wider selection and they carry some organic products. I%26#39;m not sure how their proies compare to Safeway or Foodland since we rarely stay on that side of the island.

    %26lt;%26lt;Star Market is in the same shopping center as K-Mart. %26gt;%26gt;

    Sort of...

About Costco and bulk items. I don%26#39;t like to waste my time in Costco unless I am buying for a party or buying a lot of wine and booze. You%26#39;ll be surprised how much gets thrown out at the end of your trip because you end up eating out so much.

A few items I do buy if the entire family is there and I have to go to Costco anyway.

lunch meats, eggs, booze, soft drinks, waters, premade salads, gift items like mac nuts, steaks

I think the offerings at Safeway are just fine. I know I am in the minority on this subject, but over buying just makes me crazy. I end up so mad at myself that last day. Just MO.

The last few trips I%26#39;ve taken to Kauai, I%26#39;ve travelled solo, and Costco was never practical for me. I just don%26#39;t eat that much when I%26#39;m on vacation, and find myself even buying more than I need at Foodland and Big Save. I%26#39;m lucky if I can get through a half gallon of juice in a week, and I never buy more than a half dozen eggs for the week.

    bringing golf clubs

Anyone have any tips for bringing clubs on the plane? Is there an extra charge?

    bringing golf clubs

    Aloha KauaiJoy,

I%26#39;m assuming you mean for interisland flights? Island Air did not charge my husband extra for 3 pieces of oversized luggage (bike, 50 lb box, lg duffle bag). But, that might have been an exception rather than the rule. They may ask you to ';plane-side'; check the clubs. You would get a bright tag to put on your bag %26amp; hand it off as you board the plane. Like I said to a previous poster, expect to pay the fee, but you may luck out!

    bringing golf clubs

I think NatureCat is right, it really all depends on who is manning the counter and if the plane is full.

Be prepared for the charge and happy if they don%26#39;t assess it.

We had no problem or extra charge on Go! from Honolulu to Kauai...Clubs need to be in hard sided case and not weigh over 50 pounds.

If in doubt - call the airline directly.

    3Chihuahuas

With the extra bag fees that most airlines charge these days it%26#39;s not worth the hassle taking them especially if you are planning to play only a couple of rounds. And unless you are a low handicapper and must have your sticks, you%26#39;re better off renting a set of clubs when you get there. You can find a good set of rentals for anywhere from $25 to $45.

According to http://www.golfonlanai.com, club rental is $70. We are taking our clubs, as we plan to play a few rounds. My Mrs might be more attached to using her own clubs, as they her own blend of irons and hybrids. The savings will buy us more than a few post-round beverages.

That being said, if I were only playing once I would rent clubs.

If you end up going to Kauai and play golf, hang on to your hat at Poipu (still loved it) and check the weather forecast for Princeville - winter weather can be unpredictable, cool, and wet (still worth it).

Have fun, forget about your score.

Just want to thank everyone for their help!

Just wanted to post a thought that we had, my wife and I are going to Lanai/Kona for 8 nights in June, planning on playing three times, twice on Lanai and once on Kona. We looked at renting, shipping the clubs ups, or checking them with the airline. While renting them is certainly more expensive it is the least hassle, and the final deciding factor for us was if you ship them or bring them, you are paying no matter how many rounds you play- if you are renting, and for some reason you decide not to play any of the rounds, you don%26#39;t pay, which decreases the cost differential. So we are renting. Just my opinion.

  • Fairmont Orchid or Hapuna Prince

I am about to book staying 6 nights in June with my husband and 13yr old daughter. Looks like the pricing I got was Fairmont at approximately 500 more than Hapuna. I have seen Fairmont on many T%26amp;L, Conde Nast, etc.. and was leaning toward it but seems that Hapuna has a better beach and is a smaller hotel. We usually stay at very nice hotels (more along the lines of the Four Seasons Hualalei) but I am trying to be a little more frugal. Which one (Hapuna or Fairmont) would meet the criteria of a convenient location, better food, nicer beach, better rooms, and the best views or ambience generally? Thanks so much!!! I always depend on my fellow tripadvisors and have never been steered wrong!

    Fairmont Orchid or Hapuna Prince

I don%26#39;t think you can compare the two, the Fairmont is clearly superior to the Hapuna Prince. (It used to be the Ritz-Carlton.) There is only a small beach there compared to Hapuna Beach, but if a beach is important for you than you might want to consider the Mauna Kea Resort instead.

    Fairmont Orchid or Hapuna Prince

How about the Mauna Lani? It has been some years since I stayed there, but I loved it then.

If also would recommend the Mauna Lani but if price is the ultimate critera, then Hapuna. However, Fairmont is far superior to Hapuna.

    Bill

Are you sure the Hapuna Prince is pricing out higher than the Fairmont Orchid? Fairmont is running a very good promo right now (I won%26#39;t say how much my rate is for my stay in May 09, but it%26#39;s LOW - lower than the lowest rate at the Hilton Waikoloa and even lower than my booked rate at the Sheraton Keauhou). Unfortunately, rates have been going up due to increased popularity of their promo.

On the fairmont.com site, enter NFAF under promo code for your dates of interest to see what rates are offered. If you like the rates, search facebook and other social networking sites for Fairmont employees who are willing to share their booker ID%26#39;s with you. They%26#39;ll get $10 per reservation booked and it was encouraged by Fairmont a few weeks ago since it%26#39;s yielding higher occupancy rates for them.

Bluefan, I am seeing wins on priceline for Hapuna Prince between 75 and 100. I don%26#39;t think I could get a room at the fairmont for that.

I would say Orchid because the hotel is right at sea level (or close) rather than terraced up above the beach and because it is walking distance to Mauna Lani%26#39;s snorkeling and fish ponds. BUT if the price is wildly less at Hapuna....

Hapuna is a BIG SANDY beach with possibility of rips and shore break. Orchid and Mauna Lani have smaller, sand and rock beaches. Depends what you want. No beach on the island is like the Gulf beaches.

    wow wpbii

that%26#39;s unreal. you seeing that on biddingfortravel.com for Jun 09? (can%26#39;t access BFT at work).

can%26#39;t go wrong at either the Hapuna or Orchid if you%26#39;re able to book at such low rates. just don%26#39;t expect an ocean view ;-)

I love the Hapuna Prince BUT the rooms at the Fairmont are much nicer, the Prince is getting ready for a remodel (IMHO). Since you normally stay at 4S type places you might find the Hapuna rooms not up to your standards. I feel the beach at Hapuna is far superior and in June I would not worry about rips.. Have you looked into the Mauna Kea Beach Resort? I love the beach there, the rooms were just renovated and it has 4S type staff.

Thank you all for your suggestions and tips!! For six nights it was only 500 more for the Orchid so sounds like that would be a good deal for us. I will check the promo code and look into Mauna...Thanks again!

Also the Fairmont is on the Muana Lani Resort property is is beautiful.

    Wetsuit?

We are debating on packing ';shorty'; wetsuits this year. We didn%26#39;t need them on Maui the last couple of years in May, but it sounds like the water may be colder this year and we intend on being in the water as much as we can. Can anyone give input who has been snorkeling recently? We sure hate to add the extra to our luggage, but...

    Thanks!

    Wetsuit?

We always go in late May/early June and have never needed a wetsuit. And we%26#39;re in the water a lot.

    Wetsuit?

Without getting into the global warming thing, why would the Pacific ocean be colder this year? The water varies by only a couple of degree%26#39;s. You won%26#39;t need wetsuits unless your going skin diving.

Wetsuits, no but I do pack a rash guard. Doesn%26#39;t take up much space, good for snorkeling if I don%26#39;t want to get burned and if you surf or boogie board it prevents a rash.

Can someone please tell me what a rash guard is? I%26#39;ve seen it mentioned before but am not familiar with it. Thanks.

    http://www.rashguardshirtco.com/

Rash guards help protect against chafing when you surf but now they are used by moms to protect their little ones from the sun. They come with a UPF rating.

Thanks...I have a long sleeve rash guard I bought at the local surf shop here. I used it last year as sun protection...not really helpful with warmth. Someone posting about the extended winter added that the water is colder than this time last year. I was mainly wondering if that was indeed true. I think the water was about 78 degrees when we went to Maui first week of May last year. It was just bearable for me to do about 45-60 minutes in the water before I got cold and that was with my long sleeve black rash guard.

    jebett,

Thanks for the link! My kids both need new rash guards before we go to Kauai in June. My kids have been wearing them for years for extra sun protection.

    Marti

Here is another website that has great stuf for kids!

    http://www.tugasunwear.com/

Amazon.com has a bunch of places that sell them for adults and children but my kids love the camo prints on Tuga%26#39;s website.

I have a wetsuit vest I was going to bring along. Takes up less space than a full shortie wetsuit. I%26#39;m used to my local YMCA%26#39;s 85+ degree water, so 78 sounds a little chilly to me.

I am hoping for 78 degrees, though I am not sure they have these kind of temps yet. A vest sounds like a good idea. I just want to be able to snorkel comfortably. I

    Timeshare presentation freebies

    Hi all,

We are coming to Hawaii during the second week of May. We will staying in oahu for 4 days. I read in some forums that they will give freebies if we attend a timeshare presentation. Can you guys let me know where i can get information about these timeshare. I have attended couple of timeshare presentations and have avoided them successfully.

Any help would be really useful in saving some bucks.

    Timeshare presentation freebies

Just walk up and down the street. They will be offering you free shows, etc. Also, many of the hotels have ';help'; desks that will help you to your nearest timeshare deal. You won%26#39;t have any trouble finding them!!

    Timeshare presentation freebies

you really wont save anything.... the will jack up the prices and disount them for you to appear good..

its what you can get on line. And you loose about 3 hours of your vactaion....

Many times the freebe is $100 off in resort credit if you buy so much....

And the now have qualifications such as own a home, earn over $75,000 a year, attend with your spouse, etc. If you fib and dont qualify they can legaly bill you the full rate of the activites they gave you a discount on..... they take your credit card and you sign a contract to complete to their satisfaction the full sales presentation..

Its a total rip..... you trying to rip them off and they trying to rip you off.... and they do it 8 hours a day, 365 days a year....who do you thing has the advantage......Its like going to a used car lot for your vacation.....really

Did it once. Would not do it again. Waste of everyone%26#39;s time.

Since both spouses have to attend, try some math. Add up your 2 airfares, lodging cost, car rental cost, taxi to/from home airport or parking there. This is your fixed COST OF BEING IN HAWAII. Divide by number of waking hours you have in Hawaii. This is what you are paying to be there each waking hour.

Now, how long is a timeshare presentation? How much TOTAL time does going to one take, counting getting there early? Multiply that times your cost/hour of BEING THERE. Do you want to pay that much to sit thru the presentation to get the freebie? It%26#39;s not free!!! You are paying for your time and you could be doing something else during that time.

    Only you know.

We%26#39;ve never been asked to give them a credit card.(that sounds a little goofy) Over the years we%26#39;ve received %26#39;copter rides, meals and even cash. Not a bad deal.[%26#39;]

Thanks a lot for the info guys.

I just wanted to get a free helicopter ride.

    I am a little greedy.. aint i?

There%26#39;s no ';free'; helicopter ride, if you have to earn it by spending precious vacation hours attending a sales presentation you have no intention of buying.

We just arrived home yesterday and we had done a Wyndham timeshare presentation on Thursday. You do have to give them your credit card and drivers licence when you sign in. You will also have to give them a $20 bill at the first sign in when you get your appointment time, which you will get back at the end of the presentation. Wyndham gives out four $25 coupons that can be used at all outrigger hotel based activities as well as several other stores and and activities in the Wiakiki area. I%26#39;m not sure the $100 you get from this will be enough for a helicopter ride. Both you and your spouse will have to attend this, and if you count your time in paradise as money save your self the aggravation. These sales people use very high pressure sales approach.

This along with a much more aggresive approach to up selling you everywhere in Wiakiki. Our family goes to Wiakiki every year and the aggressive nature of everyone trying to get you into there place of business over the previous years was more than a little aggrevating. We had everything from the 15% tip already added to the dinner bill to street perfomers telling you how much you should give them! Our cab driver had only had 2 fares prior to picking us up at the airport at 3 PM and he started at 6 AM ! So you can see the world economy is even hitting Hawaii.

Thanks Duded for comfirming the credit card requirement

The time share folks are no longer giving discounts or anything on a Helicopter as far as I know. Several years ago there was a fatal Helo cash on Kauia and all the passengers were on time share discounts.... there was a law suit... the result was that the time share folks quit any association with timeshares........

Since you get $100 off a 210 to 450 Heli tour.... woopie.... consider wasited over $150 in vacation time... to get 100 off, Well pardner, onLine the 450 tour can be had for 380 and the 210 for $165

So ,you could have saved 45 on line.... no sales time

Add $150 for vacation time... and your discount Helo( they dont ever give totaly free ticket...) ride that would have cost $165 on line.... cost you 110+ 150= $260.00 for a $165 tour......

Man thats one heck of a deal..... Why ,thats only $50 over full list price!!!......what a deal.... and you wasted 1/2 of the day, indeed.... you are schrewd

I don%26#39;t know if they%26#39;ve all changed, but about a year ago, we did attend a timeshare presentation in Waikiki. We got free tickets to that magic show (I believe it was magic) at the Beachcomber as well as free tickets to a dinner cruise. And we were in and out of that timeshare presentation in 2 hours. The salesman we had was pretty cool though. He basically told us up front that he knows most people (including us) just come for the freebies, which was totally cool with him. He said ust let him do his spiel and say yes or no. That was it. When we said he no, he just said OK!!

Again, I don%26#39;t know if all timeshare presentations are like this or if they%26#39;ve changed, but I actually thought it wasn%26#39;t bad.

  • Jeep Rental

We are traveling to Maui for our Honeymoon, Aug 30 through Sept 5. We definitly want to rent a Jeep Wrangler. Were can we get the best deal, that is reliable? I would rather support a local owned company, or are we better off going with a national firm like Thrifty or Hertz?

    Jeep Rental

I have seen lots and lots of Jeeps at Alamo. That is really your best way to go. You are still supporting people on Maui - they work there.

The 4 door unlimited seems to be wildly popular. .

    Jeep Rental

jmarino - Supporting the local businesses is a great idea, as the previous poster stated you will be doing so by renting the car. However there are a multitude of options.

http://www.bio-beetle.com/ They rent Jeeps, all vehicles are powered by bio-diesel. Located in Kihei and they will pick you up.

http://www.kiheirentacar.com/ Another locally owned company that has a good reputation.

Two other options are AA Aloha (hawaiicarrental.com) and discounthawaiicarrental.com. Both of these are agencies on the islands that actually book via the major car rental companies - there is the choice of booking direct through them, or they will take a few minutes to research and get back to you - then provide you with a code that will allow you to book directly with the major companies.

If you are a COstco member they offer very good rates as well.

    Humpback Whales

We got quite a show this morning. Sitting out at the Cliffs facing the ocean. Lots of spouting and fin slaps. Looked like mom and her calf. A beautiful day here on the north shore.

    %26lt;%26lt;We got quite a show this morning. %26gt;%26gt;

OHHH great! seems like they are staying longer this year. I hope they will be there in 2 weeks, I hope, I hope!!!!!

    Humpback Whales

I was surprized and grateful. I thought we had missed them. They put on a show for almost 30 minutes.I hope they will be here for your trip also.

Aliomanu too. Big action. They%26#39;re late going home.

Is it because of the coldness of the water? Are they confused? It%26#39;s been colder in Hawaii and maybe they don%26#39;t know it%26#39;s April already.

They are so beautiful. How lucky you are to see them and it%26#39;s almost May.

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

I know it has been quite awhile since I%26#39;ve seen them here on the South Shore - I look for them every day!

Nice to know some of them are hanging around the island a little longer!

Poipu vs. North Shore in Summer

Hello all, we will do 2 days /nights in cabin near canyon, then leave to North Shore for 5 or 6 days/nights - but we do need to surf and I heard waves are much better on Southern end in late June/early July.

I prefer the scenery of the North Shore, but any additional hiking trips would be far away, for the most part, from the North Shore, and if waves are much better down South in the Summer, I could be convinced to change our plans and stay near Poipu.

Surfing/bodysurfing/snorkeling is very important to wifey and I and our 2 wild animals (a.k.a., children).

Thank you for your kind assistance!

Poipu vs. North Shore in Summer

the summertime brings swells up from the new zealand area, as it is their winter...so SOUTH SHORE for best surfing and boogie boarding.

However, with the higher surf, the south shore snorkeling has a chance of being a bit stirred up, but you should still be able to get in some snorkeling days,as well.

Trips to the North shore, might be an idea, to combine some snorkeling, and maybe hike the hanakapiai trail.

Tunnels should be really great late june early july.

We, for 12 years of visits, stayed in poipu, and drove up on sunny days to the north shore.

Or, you could stay up in the beautiful north for the best snorkeling, as well as fabulous views, and drive down south for the better surfing and boogie boarding.

Oh, decisions, decisions, when vacationing in paradise.

Either way, you cannot go wrong.

    Have a most wonderful visit.

    Denny

Poipu vs. North Shore in Summer

I would usually say stay on the NS during the summer but if surfing is your big preference then staying East or South would be better. The trouble is the snorkeling is better on the NS so one way or the other you are going to be doing some driving. On the NS the swells can be pretty good in the morning (4-6 ft maybe) and then like glass in Hanalei Bay the rest of the day. You can still do some boogy boarding and of course one of the most beautiful hikes is the trail at the end of the road.

If you are a very experienced surfer you could surf at Kealia on the East side about 30 minutes from Hanalei. I won%26#39;t go in there but again it is for experienced swimmers or surfers and there%26#39;s a lifeguard tower.

The NS is truly a spectacular place to visit.

    Thanks Kalapa and Jebett,

I think NS is just too beautiful to not stay there, and so far it seems 2 days/nights in Kokee wil be PLENTY.

We%26#39;ll probably try to stop at Southern end when we depart Kokee, and then head back as needed for surfing.

Now we need to pick a condo at NS - - such problems to have!!

I just read both of your posts. I think 2 days exploring the Waimea Canyon would be ample time to do the hikes you are interested in. We have done both the Pihea and Canyon trail in a day...they both have absolutly stunning scenery and i think it is a great combination as they are so different. If you do not do the loop, but only the Awa%26#39;awapuhi trail the other day it is about 4 hours. The weather has to be clear in order to enjoy the view at the end. With 2 days hopefully you will get some great weather.

As for The North Shore all of the condo%26#39;s are in princeville. except for the HCR. There are houses to rent in Hanalei...wich gives you the option of walking to to town, the beach, restaurants, etc but you may be booking too late to get anything decent. Are you looking for a large condo resort? How many bedrooms? what is your budget? Dates?

There are many different condo options in Princeville, along with homes. It really depends on what you are looking for and I am sure many people will chime in on that one.

you will love the North Shore.

    Sally

    Smiles:

Here are some websites to find accommodations on the North Shore. As Sally said, most are in the Princeville area high on the bluff overlooking Hanalei Bay. It%26#39;s a planned community made up of private homes and condos surrounded by a golf course plus the soon to reopen St Regis Hotel. In Hanalei and Heana are homes and Hanalei Colony Resort, a condo complex on the ocean. No TV, phones, internet etc. Remote but a lovely setting.

If you stay in Princeville where you can find condos or homes in all price ranges you are either walk down to a beach via a path or a 5-15 minutes drive to a great beach.

One of the best local surfing spots is below a resort called Hanalei Bay Resort. Puu Poa Beach is below.

    www.wizardpub.com/kauai/kauaerials.html

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/鈥rinceville

    http://www.vacationrentalsinkauai.com/

    Good luck.

    Thanks kalapakidooley, sallyho and jebett!!

Access to things is important - although I can justify $250 (or less) for a night in paradise, I need to keep my wife happy if her back acts up....she won%26#39;t be able to last as long as me and the kids, as she had her 2nd discectomy not long ago, so we would prefer to be able to walk to Hanalei Bay, if possible, so she could retire to a comfortable room without having to worry about picking us up in the car (schlepping around).

Walking to the foodstore/ or a laid back restaurant would be a nice but not necessary option. I cannot spend a fortune on food, so we won%26#39;t have more than 1 meal (if any) at Bali Hai, I am sure. We hope to have a place where we can cook (and maybe grill), which seems doable just about everywhere the NS.

We%26#39;ll be mostly in the water or on trails.

A beautiful view of H. Bay or some other body of water with mountains as well....would be very nice

Please help me decide if I should be in Hanalei Bay Resort or Hanalei Colony, or a house in Hanalei. HBR seems to cover all our needs, and Halanei Colony sounds great, but it maybe out of the way of conveniences ( I haven%26#39;t checked on Colony - thanks for the suggestion Sallyho).

Houses....if the view is right, I would consider.

If H. Bay Resort is walkable to the Bay and other conveniences,it is my leader so far.

We would like a place fresh and attractive for our last 6 nights in paradise.

And thanks again for the Hanalei River recommendation kalapakidooley - I will be at KayakKauai doing just that!

Thanks again for your help everyone - I am also going to post this under some topic more distinctively North Shore -

Just so you know, the Bali Hai Restaurant at HBR is closed for now, and it will probably be awhile before it reopens.

Yup Bali Hai been closed for a long time. Hopefully the lounge reopens soon. I know I%26#39;m a broken record but jeez. What%26#39;s the owners problem?

Anyway the positive about HBR is there%26#39;s bell service to schlep your junk to the beach. The walk down is 5 minutes but back up is 10 and a good workout. The pool is very relaxing and a new massage company is coming in to do poolside back rubs or full massages in the recently redone gazebo area overlooking the mountains. There%26#39;s poolside barbeque service and the sundry shop is getting their liquor license soon and can sell beer and wine.

Hanalei Colony is a much different experience. They too have a day spa next door, but it is just more remote.

Houses in Hanalei are a great way to go but it might be getting too late to find something nice. Maybe check at Anini. Serentity Rentals is a good rental company.

    Have you checked VRBO?

I should have added my endorsement for Hanalei Bay Resort even though the Bali Hai Restaurant is closed. It%26#39;s a beautiful resort that I think you and your family would really enjoy. The pool is absolutely gorgeous and very kid-friendly, but peaceful as well.

I%26#39;m pleased to see that Hawaii honors our military with a month-long appreciation. (This non-military person wishes all of the states would do the same.)

Cuatro at the Foodland center in Kihei

Small place holds about 30 people

    Lots of PuuPuu Choices.

    2 dinners

    Both Fish Special (monchong ~ONO!)

27 dollars each included is a vegetable of the day. on our day it was String beans and a starch,(depends which preparation style you choose (truffled mashed, garlic mashed/basmati rice etc.

8 dollar salads House salad/Tijuana Caesar

Bill 75 dollars for 2 with one one extra menu item (2 dollars) no drinks except water.

No alcohol/liquor license as of now so it BYOB etc.

    Service was OK, Nothing special.

Food was good except this one fact, DW%26#39;s fish prepartion was the ';Lets stack everything on top of each other'; style.

We both think this style is well past its expiration date. Old style IMHO.

The food was good, but it wasnt a ';We have to go back soon'; experience.

When we do, we will try some different menu items.

SMG - it%26#39;s good to have a new option in the area, glad you made it over there - had to laugh about the stacking of the food, am inclined to agree on that thought.

    mahalo for the update

yeah the ';Stack it High all on top of one another'; was bad, and funny.

One thing, the wood bench seats on the sides of the reastaurant were not comfortable.9No pillows just hard wood back (think outback bar tables)

DW said she felt a bit uncomfortable beacause the place is small and the tables are VERY close to one another that she couldn%26#39;t help but look at other peoples plates/tables since there were so close.

We will try it again, just no plans for anytime soon.

SMG - the additional thoughts are greatly appreciated - as well as feedback from your DW. Doesn%26#39;t sound like I would enjoy it either.

Whales and baby seal and sun!

Saw whales swimming north early this morning from Kealia Beach - just spouts and backs, but neat. Last night we watched a baby seal (seal lady volunteer told us she%26#39;s 5 months old - she remembered exactly when she%26#39;d been born and was tagged...seal, not seal lady!) in front of Koa Kea - watched her cover her face with her flipper, roll on her back and yawn and then scoot off into the water...a treat - weather has been cooler than normal, but sunny and beautiful north and south; don%26#39;t hink we%26#39;ve ever seen the water so gorgeous.

Whales and baby seal and sun!

    Thanks, sigh. Enjoy.

Whales and baby seal and sun!

We were jsut a poipu beach park day before yesterday to bbq.

A monk seal was all happy in dreamland, and the visitors were taking photos, honoring the roped off distance.

Well, monk seal number two, about the same size ( big) lumbers up on the sand, and wants the exact same hunk of sand # 1 was sleeping on.

It came down to wide open mouths, a light bight, and # 2 monker decided that it was just as comfortable and less hassel about 8 feet away from

    #1.

Oh, also there was a sailing vessel, ripping along in the trades off shore...low freeboard...and hauling.

About the same time as the monk seals were discussing bedrooms, looked like a shroud or stay parted, and down came the mast and mainsail.

The vessel was drifting with the winds, and the poipu lifeguards, zipped out with their jet ski,and towed them in toward about kiahuna/waiohai beach area.

Yes, they have self parking in a parking garage. No fee other than the normal resort fee they all charge.

ps: The parking spaces are tight so think about renting a small car.

One-Way Car Rental (ITO to KOA)

I am struggling trying find decent rental car rates for a pickup at Hilo and dropoff at Kona. It would be a 4-day weekday rental. Normally I would use Priceline or Hotwire, but they don%26#39;t have one-way rental options. Does anyone have any tips for getting discounted one-way rates on the Big Island?

One-Way Car Rental (ITO to KOA)

    hawaiicarrental.com

    discounthawaiicarrental.com

    or Costcotravel.com

Going direct through Alamo with the discount code %26#39;hipromo%26#39;.

There may be an additional charge for the %26#39;drop off%26#39;.

Be aware that rental car fleets have been reduced. Rental rates can change daily - some types of vehicles may not be available.

One-Way Car Rental (ITO to KOA)

We rented through National who doesn%26#39;t charge a drop off (or didn%26#39;t when I was looking a couple months ago). My plan of attack when renting is to look at www.carrentals.com . They%26#39;ll show you the end price including all the taxes and fees that you%26#39;ll be charged. I then will do a search on the web for discount codes for a particular car rental company to apply when booking. I%26#39;ll book and then keep checking every few days for rate changes.

I guess first you need to let us know what you consider decent. You might incur a drop off charge depends on the rental company. Most all of the sites I have ever used do have one way options, you fill out the pickup location and the drop off if it is different. I know for sure Orbitz does that.

discounthawaiicarrental.com is great. When are you visiting?

    Dear Toronto:

If you want best beaches w/ only 4 days I recommend staying Waikoloa (best beaches) or Kona (good snorkeling and site seeing) and ranging from Captain Cook in the south to Pololu Valley in the north.

If you want to focus more on waterfalls, gardens, Volcano then maybe range from Black Sand Beach east to Waipio Valley north (staying in Hilo or Volcano).

That avoids the car drop off penalty if any. Remember the Big Isalnd is 220 miles around on the main road not including side trips, so there%26#39;s no way you are gonna see everything in 4 days anyways.

    Happy Planning, TheodoreJay

TJ has just pointed out why it is a good idea to rent in ITO and drop off in KOA if you are coming for a short trip. The 3 hour prime time driving is very valuable time when you are here for a short trip.

Thank you for the feedback. I guess I%26#39;m used to getting great rates thru Priceline, so my definition of ';decent rates'; may be skewed. For instance, for the other Hawaiin islands I%26#39;ve been able to get a compact for around $12/day+tax and SUV and convertibles for around $25/day+tax. The one-way rates I%26#39;m finding for the Big Island are around $50/day for a compact and around $100/day for an SUV or convertible (car rental dot com). Crazy! Before I bite the bullet and pay these insane rates, I thought I%26#39;d better do some more digging.

That sounds a bit high but it depends on when you are coming. If it is during Ironman in October those would actually be decent rates and I would book them, they tend to run out of cars during that timeframe.

We are visiting for four weeknights near the end of May. I don%26#39;t believe there are any large events going on during this time.

No events... hmmm did you try the web sites we gave you? Did you check what a weekly rate would be? Sometimes it is less than a 4 day rental..

    More tipping Questions

I was just have a couple more questions about tipping - hope they don%26#39;t seem too silly!

With regard to bar service - do you just leave say a couple of dollars sitting on the bar from the change you receive back from the bartender?

If we paid by credit card in a restaurant is that sufficient if we just add on an extra 15% -20% to the bill or would some staff expect cash for service - say as we would tip a porter a few dollars for delivering our luggage?

What would be a normal tip for a day tour for the guide and driver?

    thanks for any replies.

    Jem

    More tipping Questions

Rich Americans always leave a 20-25% tip, no matter what.%26#39;/]\

    More tipping Questions

But us regular people leave 15 to 20%.

Jemtide - yes to both questions. As far as for a tour guide, I usually don%26#39;t tip them unless they went out of their way and worked hard and/or they were really nice.

Standard safe tipping is a dollar on every five---twenty per cent. More if you feel the service was extraordinary.

I truly love my Aussie friends but jeez---just what is the tipping expectation in Oz?

I can only comment personally - not for all australians but we tip (at home in australia) if we appreciate the service or quality of food but it%26#39;s not compulsory and I don%26#39;t think service staff have an expectation to receive a certain percentage of the total bill as a tip - Restaurants/ cafes here commonly have a container of some description by the till for tips so when people go to pay they can tip what they can afford or want to.

The bar tender %26amp; waitress will still serve you in australia (from my experience) if you don%26#39;t tip them - you may receive better service if you do but they are supposed to be on a fixed wage and probably under the scrutiny of a manager who wants the customer to spend - so I guess it won%26#39;t win any favours with a boss for an employee to ignore someone trying to buy a drink or wanting service! that said we would leave change on the bar when we leave and hope the staff pick it up! So some of us tip - (but not all the time)it%26#39;s just not compulsory and basically what you feel is fair.

    Jem

If you pay with a credit card you can just add the tip to the card, you don%26#39;t have to leave cash.

Yes, I you leave cash on the bar for drinks. I usually tuck it under my empty glass ($1 per drink).

It%26#39;s just fine to add the tip on the charge card. There%26#39;s a line just above, before you fill in the total, for that purpose.

Sorry, never had a guide or driver :) suze

If you use a credit card - it is very easy to just add the tip - whatever the amount - to the total. It%26#39;s the norm. You don%26#39;t have to leave cash.

Same goes when you sign off a bar bill to your room account.

Tour guides - it depends on the tour. If it%26#39;s a few dollars for a driver - great. Catamarans - for a good crew - $20.00.

You will find that on some tours, they are utterly shameless about asking for tips. Do what you feel is best.

suggestions for a quiet condo with great ocean view?

    Am I asking too much?

I am looking for a condo, with a great ocean view, where I can sit on the lanai and watch the waves (i.e. not the pool, or a road, and not have lots of trees interrupt the view!) which is reasonably quiet (i.e. not full of Spring Break crowds) with 2 or 3 bedrooms.

    Any suggestions?

suggestions for a quiet condo with great ocean view?

Check out the views from the Kahana Village condos. We have a number of pictures we made while there in 2006 at www.boilermaker.smugmug.com. Just open the Maui album. The Kahana Village website is very reliable for true pictures as well. We are returning there in December as they do offer 3 bedrooms.

    Have a wonderful trip!

In South Maui: Makena Surf, Wailea Ekahi, Wailea Beach Villas, Polo Beach Club. These are all beachfront on good swimming beaches. Also see some in North Kihei that are oceanfront, but not on good swimming beaches; same story at Maalaea. One exception there that IS on a good beach: Sugar Beach.

See aerial views of all Maui condos at:

    www.wizardpub.com

    check out www.hphresort.com

You might check out Hale Hui Kai....especially if you will spring for a more ocean front location...I haven%26#39;t stayed there but have neighbours that do every time they go to Maui and they love it! It is on Keawakapu Beach which is a lovely stretch of sand! Not much in the way of beautiful grounds and the pool is very small (but it is a lovely beach) and there are no washers and dryers in the units...and that makes this property a no go for me! Still if directly oceanfront is important to you...check it out.

    http://wizardpub.com/maui/mrhalehuikai.html

Depends a lot on your budget. Makena Surf is ideal in South Maui for ocean views and quiet. Elua is alsonice if you get the Ocean Front places but there is a public pathway between you and the beach. Ekahi might be a bit of a stretch to hear the waves. Wailea Beach Villas if you stay in one of the expensive villas and not the condos is good but you will probably pay over $2500 A NIGHT. In Kihei, there are a couple but they will be noiser with more crowds. Kihei Beach Villas, Sugar Beach, and Royal Mauian are all on the beach side and you do not have to walk across the road. I would stay away from Kaanapali if you want quiet but head a little further up and you will find there are some places in Kapalua that are right on the ocean%26#39;s edge. You need to book the GOLD villas to get the ones close to the ocean otherwise you need to ride a shuttle down to the beach and you will definitely not see the whales from way up the mountain. The other option is a home. Contact Villas of Hawaii or Tropical Villa Vacations for the higher end type of places and Kapalua Resort if you want West Maui.

you don%26#39;t give us you%26#39;re budget but check out the condos in the Kahana, Napili areas. There are many small ocean front condos with at least 2 bedrooms. Add www.chasenrainbows.com to your searches...good luck.

I second the recommendation for Hale Hui Kai. You can%26#39;t do better than to be in one of their ocean front units.

A cheaper place is Punahoa which is farther north but nice and quiet and direct ocean front. No pool there but it%26#39;s a short walk to Kam 1 beach. Not fancy at all but quiet and a great view.

We%26#39;ve stayed at both these places over the years and liked the ambience.

    Kim

We are always looking for waterfront accomodations that include:

    -washer/dryer

    -high-speed internet

    -two bedrooms

    -dishwasher

    -lanai

    -view of waves

    -$300 a night

Mahana and Papakea in West Maui are places we looked at. We also looked at Kamaole Nalu and Royal Mauian. We%26#39;ve stayed twice at Kamaole Nalu and were happy there even though the condo was pretty small. I know you can spend $100 less per night by staying across the street from the water in Kihei. We%26#39;ve had no luck finding anything in our price range in Napili or Wailea.

Hololani in Kahana. 2 Bedroom units, corner units have ocean views from both windows. No road noise, just the sound of the ocean. Mostly middle-aged, retired and family crowd (the kind of families that supervise their kids for the most part). Check wizardpub.com for aerial views. There are a handful of units on vrbo but most go through the on-site management.

Check out the Mahana... you can rent condo rooms through individual owners or through ResortQuest.

...just stayed there a few weeks ago and could not have been happier. I challege you to find a more ';ocean-front'; view!

  • Swine flu/air travel restrictions?

I guess I%26#39;m a worrywort, but I was wondering if this flu becomes a pandemic, how will air travel be affected? I%26#39;m set to leave in two weeks and wondering if air travel could become restricted in an effort to contain the outbreak.

    Swine flu/air travel restrictions?

You can worry about something that is out of your control. Just count down the days until you leave. According to the google maps application that tracks the swine flu the only deaths are in Mexico. I honestly think they are making a bigger deal about this than it really is.

    Maui trip report

Our trip was a 5 night stay at the Sheraton Maui. A great property that was spacious enough to be comfortable despite the fact that it was a major hotel and resort. It was chosen for the pool and the beach. Lots of room where the kids and families could be on one side and adults on the other of the pool area. We upgraded our room to a suite on Black Rock and it was beautiful. The downside: it overlook the handy man%26#39;s workyard and guest parking lot. And had the stench of a dumpster. We didn%26#39;t use the balcony so it didn%26#39;t matter. The room was spacious and gorgeous anyway.

Day 1: Sunset Dinner Cruise with Pacific Whale Foundation. We signed up for the Premier seating on the upper deck but maybe that wasn%26#39;t a good idea because it made for a rough ride everytime we turned away from the harbor. The food wasn%26#39;t great either. The food%26#39;s temp was warm and not tasty at all. The only good thing about the dinner cruise was that some of the proceeds of the price of the cruise goes to the Foundation%26#39;s whale conversatory.

Day 2: Took the advice from all the books that I read and TA posters and planned our trip to see the Sunrise at Haleakala on the day after our arrival (since we haven%26#39;t adjusted to the time zone). Still 2am is early. I booked with Maui Mountain cruisers. A good company that is always concerned about the safety of the riders. It was a clear morning and the sunrise was beautiful. Which I hear is rare. Really? Anyway, the ride downhill was fun and all riders arrived at sea level without a scratch. After a little rest, we headed to dinner at the hotel%26#39;s teppanaki restaurant. Which was probably the best meal we had there.

Day 3: Pool day! We had breakfast at the hotel%26#39;s buffet breakfast. I don%26#39;t recommend. I am from San Diego so maybe I am used to the spice and heat in my foods. The food that we had been eating was so bland. That night we headed to Lahaina for the Old Lahaina Luau. The hotel offers a shuttle into Lahaina so that we could drink up at the open bar and not worry about driving. We arrived early so we headed to the mexican food restuarant at the Cannery Mall, Los Pelones for some drinks. Ronnie is a great bartender with great stories and awesome tropical shot concoctions, he set up the night for us! The luau was great! Great show. Food...I enjoyed the pork but everything else was not so tasty. I need to bring a bottle of Tapito. I am not faulting anyone, I just think the cuisine of Hawaii is not made with a lot of spice.

Day 4: The road to Hana! We started the morning early and went to breakfast at the Gazebo. What a great meal! Classic cafe food. So yummy and the staff was very friendly. Go early, there is always a line. After breakfast, we filled up the gas tank and headed out on the day%26#39;s adventure. I was a little nervous about the possibly of driving this notorious road with my BF. We argue about stop lights when he is driving at home. I couldn%26#39;t imagine driving this road together. But it was alright. The one lane bridges were a little hairy with oncoming traffic but the drivers were all courteous and cautious. We drove all they way around the island, but it is not recommended for passenger cars. The mostly unpaved road is closed on and off and not recommended for tourists. We had an insider tip so we did it, but it takes a 4 x 4 and a great driver. (yes he did great for that part of the road.) We made it back to the hotel after 6p and ate dinner at the hotel.

Day 5: Shopping in Lahaina on Front street. That night for dinner we headed back to our favorite mexican food restuarant hoping our bartender would be there. We ate at the bar so we could watch the NBA playoffs and hear those great stories from Ronnie. The meal was good. I had warned my BF since we are from San Diego with so many great Mexican food places that we shouldn%26#39;t eat mexican while we were in Maui. But I had a really tasty meal. We closed the place...not saying much since everything is closed by 10p.

The weather was clear and beautiful with no wind. We left for Maui a few days after Easter Sunday and except for the convention of Insurance employees at the hotel, we felt we missed the crowds of Spring Break. We enjoyed our trip to Maui and are looking forward to more adventures on the other islands in the future. Bring Tapatio.

Thanks for the report. The upgrade didn%26#39;t sound like one, especially for those of us who love to use our lanai.

    Maui trip report

    Journeyme,

I appreciate the trip report. It is always good to everyone%26#39;s perspective on things. I%26#39;m glad the weather held out for you. I guess some upgrades aren%26#39;t as good as they sound but it sounds like it bother you too much. Thanks for sharing with us!!

Very helpful report. My sister and 3 daughters (16, 18, 21) will be in Maui for 7 nights end of July. Are there any stops along the road to Hana you recommend or any you don%26#39;t recommend. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing. Some good info for my next trip to Maui.

journeyme - Appreciate you taking the time to write your trip report, sounds like a good vacation.

Funny isn%26#39;t it, amazing when you get used to spicy foods how some milder things just taste bland - %26#39;have tobasco will travel%26#39;.

Thanks for the trip report! I%26#39;m headed to Maui in less than a week. How did you dress for the sunrise at Haleakala? Were you warm enough?

    Julie

For the Luau, I wore a sun dress with a light wrap for my shoulders. I was very comfortable.

For the sunrise, I was layered. I was in jeans, tennis shoes, and 2 shirts and 2 pull overs. In addition, the downhill company gave us wind breaker suits and gloves! It was cold up there!

    Maui Bodysurfing

    Hello,

We are going to Maui this weekend and are staying at the Grand Wilea. We enjoy bodysurfing and wanted to know which beaches in the area are recommended. It looks like Wilea beach gets some waves periodically.

    Thanks

    Maui Bodysurfing

I have body surfed at big beach but the waves there are pretty rough and can slam you pretty good. My favorite to body surf is Hamoa Beach on the Road to Hana. Good sized waves that generally rolled instead of broke hard at the end.

    Maui Bodysurfing

Swing by a Maui Dive shop (or any other dive shop) and they will be able to tell you what%26#39;s ';running'; that day. My guys have had some good luck at Flemming park on the West side...but that was in the winter.

Cool. Thanks for the help. Hopefully there are some decent waves this weekend.

Have a great trip and pop back and tell us what you found!

Another vote for Fleming Beach. We go there every time we go to Maui, and the body surfing is always good. They have bathroom, showers and lifeguards, too.

Since you%26#39;ll be staying in Wailea, why drive to the west side? Wander out to Big Beach and walk over to the other side - Little Beach. Yea, I know that%26#39;s where they take it all off, but Little Beach has very good body surfing. Check it out, before you drive all the way over to the other side of the island.

Depending on surf conditions..Maui dive shop sent us to Polo Beach (behind Kea Lani..lots of local kids were there that day. Just happened to be having 4 ft surf..

    www.hawaiiweathertoday.com check surf conditions.

All listed are good places...but the key is if the waves are up or not. You may go to some of these places and it will look like a lake. Since we are getting closer to summer you will begin seeing more south swell direction. I%26#39;ve generally had good success at Big Beach. The waves are a lot like Balboa in Newport just south of Balboa pier or Crystal Cove if you have ever been there.

Rental Car Fire at Alamo Parking Lot

Per Garden Island News there was a rental car fire at Alamo parking lot and more than one car involved:

Hmmmm.... must have been the Saturn we rented from ALamo in February....

The past week has not been a good one as it relates to fires on Kauai. First the hummer, then the Poipu Kai condo fire, a couple of house fires (one in Puhi and the other in Hanapepe), and now this.

    Honeymoon in June

    Hi all,

My fiancee and I are considering getting a condo in Kauai for our honeymoon June 15th to the 22nd. It sounds like the north shore will be a better fit for a honeymoon that time of year (crowds, scenery, etc). Does anybody have recomendations for specific places to stay? We%26#39;d like to spend less than $1100 for the week on lodging and would like to be in walking distance of swiming areas and restaurants if possible. I have seen condos in the Princeville area that are in our price range, but I%26#39;m not sure what the locations are like and how close they are to beaches, places to hike, restaurants, and other activities..

    Honeymoon in June

If you%26#39;re going in June of this year, you better find a place ASAP as that is high season and most of the best places are probably already rented out.

All the north shore condos are in Princeville, which is on a bluff above the ocean. The only beaches within walking distance, depending on which condo you are at will be Hideaways, Sealodge and Pua Poa Beaches. They all require quite a hike down steep trails, unless you%26#39;re staying at Hanalei Bay Resort, in which case they will shuttle you down to the beach if you want. There are very few restaurants and other activities within walking distance in Princeville. However, you will need a rental car and you are no more than about a 20-25 minute from all the great north shore beaches and about 10 minutes from restaurants and shopping in Hanalei.

    Honeymoon in June

If you stay in Princeville you are walking distance to restaurants. There%26#39;s Saffrons in Pali Ke Kua, The Westin%26#39;s Nanea Restaurant, CJ%26#39;s in the shopping center plus others.

You are looking at $150/nt but don%26#39;t forget about taxes and cleaning. It will be closer to $1200.

Desert mentioned Hanalei Bay Resort. You could get a suite or studio at that price. HBR has a lovely sandy bottom lagoon style pool and Puu Poa Beach is below. You might find a Sealodge unit at around that price, but I%26#39;m afraid the better units are probably taken.

Princeville Plantation is a large complex with 2 and 3 bedrooms but on the Alohacondos.com website there are some good deals. I%26#39;m afraid your balcony might be the facing the busy road but these are nice and new. I saw some for $149/nt. I think staying on the North Shore is all about the view and PP doesn%26#39;t have any views. Cliff%26#39;s is another complex in your price range. I hope by June they%26#39;ll be done with the new pool. I think they should be.

If you have seen a few places already maybe you can link them for us and someone can say how they liked it.

Try going on the summitpacific.com website and look at HBR and Sealodge condos. Both are very nice and close to restaurants and shopping, hikes and ocean sports.

VRBO is another good site to rent by owner.

Although jebett is right that you can walk to the restaurants she mentioned, it could be up to as much as a 2 mile walk each way, depending on which restaurant and which condo complex you%26#39;re staying at. And other than a couple of places at the shopping center at the entrance, in general these are generally high priced restaurants.

We%26#39;ve stayed in Princeville several times and love it, but we don%26#39;t plan on walking to eat much. We mostly prefer to cook dinner in the condo and enjoy it on the lanai most night. Just don%26#39;t want anyone to think that Princeville is like Hanalei with lots of restaurants and bars you can walk to. IMO the choices are pretty limited in Princeville itself.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I will find some links today and post them to get opinions. Do you think we%26#39;d be better off staying at Hanalei compared to Princeville?

Hanalei is a fun little town. I would not suggest staying in the only little hotel there. Your options are homes. You could be walking distance to town which is a plus. This is a very popular area to stay during the summer so the good properties are probably taken but worth a look. Here is ads on VRBO. Beware. Pictures can be deceiving. Check them out throughly.

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/…a2999

I know you said you would like place with in walking distance to restaurants but since it%26#39;s almost May, you might have some trouble with availability. We booked our June condo (we will be there from the 12th-26th) last August. Hanalei Colony Resort is past Hanalei about 20 minutes. It has a nice beach and one restaurant on the premises. You would need to drive back to Hanalei for other restaurants but the location is very nice. Also, they are cutting folks deals. You might want to email them and find out availability and pricing (if this looks nice to you). We are staying there for the last couple of nights of our stay.

    www.hcr.com

Another idea if you cannot find lodging on the nrth shore in your price range, try Poipu. It%26#39;s also very nice. The rental agency we use is Parrish Kauai and they have availbility online. (www.ParrishKauai.com)

Good Luck and I hope you find something nice.

Never mind about Parrish. I did a quick scan and they have nothing in June on the SS in your price range except Waikomo Streams Villas. It%26#39;s next to a construction site and I would not recommend that for a honeymoon.

This website also has a nice search engine. www.KauaiVacationRentals.com

    Or vrbo.com (as jebett mentioned).

    Or Sealodge (http://www.summitpacificinc.com/sealodge.html)

  • Pool renovations at Marriot Ocean Club

Can anyone tell share your thoughts on the closure of the main pool at the Maui Marriott for repairs until June 2009? Is the construction loud? Does this cause many headaches or is there plenty of room at other pools. I am heading there on April 24th for my honeymoon and do not want any major surprises and would consider changing hotels and or islands if this is going to spoil the enviornment. Please share your thoughts if you%26#39;ve seen or been there recently?

Pool renovations at Marriot Ocean Club

Check back with me in a week. We are going next week, but from what I understand they don%26#39;t start til the 20th, so i might not be much help. but i will try.

Pool renovations at Marriot Ocean Club

Was wondering the same thing. We arent going to Maui until July. However, we are timeshare owners and would love an update on the status of the pool. Anybody?

We were there last week. I%26#39;m just so glad that we were able to get our vacation in prior to the closure. I couldn%26#39;t imagine being there with that beautiful pool closed. Especially since our room overlooked the main pool and ocean. Is your room in the older part of the resort or in the newer condos? The other pools by each of the newer condos are tiny compared to the main pool. Hope someone who%26#39;s currently there see%26#39;s your posts and gives you an update.

We are time share owners who swapped for this Marriott. It took us over a year to get this one....We will be there June 7-14 which I think is the last week before the pool reopens so maybe they will finish early....Anyway, do you know if this Marriott offers a Luau? This is our first visit to Maui and we are celebrating our son%26#39;s graduation from HS. Any information or ideas would be great...

I called the hotel yesterday when I saw the post on TUG about the closure. They said in the post Iread that the pool will be completed by June 15th; however when I called they said it would be done by the 20th. They seemed pretty positive that it would be completed within those dates short of any terrible storms. I was quite upset when I read the post and many who own were complaing that they were not told about this.

We traded our week from Aruba and rented another week from an owner. We won%26#39;t be checking in until June 26th and I do hope it will be completed.

There are other pools at the resort so I suggest you continue to ask others. Try the Marriot Tug board as well and their proerty reviews. Might have to pay a fee for the review section.

    also:

We were there last week and didn%26#39;t see any Luau at the hotel. We went to the Old Lahaina Luau which was wonderful. They are more traditional and don%26#39;t do any type of fire tosses. I believe the Hyatt which is the hotel just south of the Marriott offers Luaus.

    Enjoy! We sure did!

Thanks for the info.....I will check into the Hyatt Luau. Is there shopping and restaurants within walking distance from the Marriott? One more question...is the Marriott on the rainy side of the island?

The Marriott is on the sunny side! Whalers Village is easily accessible by the walkway along the beach. About a 12 minute walk. There%26#39;s also a trolley that you can take there, but from the trolley schedule there are several stops and would take about 20 minutes. On the last day we walked to the Whaler%26#39;s Village and took the trolley back to the Marriott which is only about a 2 minute ride. The Whalers Village has shops %26amp; restaurants.

We were there last week. The other pools are great. but the thought of all those people in the big pools, venturing over to the other 2 pools. Oh my it will be crowded! Good luck

How are the beaches around the Marriott?

  • I know that taking sand is supposedly bad luck, but...

What about shells found on the beach? I have no interest in bringing home same, or even shells for that matter. However, several people have requested shells as souvenirs. I%26#39;m not a very superstitious person, but I%26#39;d hate to offend anyone by a few shells. =)

I know that taking sand is supposedly bad luck, but...

Ohhh, good question. My Mom asked for a shell too and I didn%26#39;t even think twice about it. Is it bad luck?

    Kelly

I know that taking sand is supposedly bad luck, but...

Taking home LAVA is bad luck, offends Pele the Volcano goddess.

Sand ... offends dead ground up coral? I%26#39;ve never heard it%26#39;s bad.

Shells ... I%26#39;ve never had any bad luck, but it%26#39;s not easy to find good intact shells here unless you dive--not great shells, anyway, maybe I find some cowries if I get lucky.

Of course if I am wrong about sand and shells I hope someone who knows better corrects me. Always happy to learn!

Well, i guess technically black sand beaches are actually ground up lava.

We didnt take any sand, rocks, or shells just to be safe. To me, it%26#39;s not really about ';luck'; or the gods or anything, it%26#39;s just trying to be considerate. Hawaii is a beautiful (and small) place that thousands of new people enjoy every day. Now I%26#39;m no ecologist, and I guess one little shell wouldn%26#39;t hurt.... but if everybody started taking hawaii back with them eventually it would make an impact.

If somebody you know really wants one, I%26#39;d say just buy a little novelty shell from ABC.

I agree with post above. Go to ABC store and buy shells etc for gifts. ABC stores also have a cute little gift called beach in a bag. It has sand, shells, and novelties such as little plastic flip flops or fish. I think they are $3.99 if memory serves me right very cute and everyone I brought one to loves them.

Yeah, I was just trying to get the ';bad luck'; part of it straight for mmpierce. People send lava rocks back to the Hawaiian Post Offices from all over the world to try to undo the bad luck ...

ecology and conservation are a different issue from the luck. Anyway, Hawaii isn%26#39;t a good place to find nice shells so the best place to find a shell souvenir is in a shop. People imagine we have beaches strewn with shells, not understanding how beaten up shells get in their trip to the shore. It is not like a truly reef-protected beach area.

We have little tiny shells on the beaches, not anything impressive.

In the Cook Islands, where they have great shells, you have to get a CITES certificate that lists the shells you take out of the country, both found and purchased. This gets presented at customs. In the Cooks, there%26#39;s a limit on coral, none on shells, quite different from here where there%26#39;s so much coral it%26#39;s used to write grafitti.

We chose not to remove anything from the natural environment on our recent trip to Maui. It was not due to any superstition, but in order to preserve things as they were, as the other posters said.

You could always send them a postcard! (or take a cool photo of a shell!) :)

mm, the bad luck lava thing is a myth. However, it does serve to keep everyone from taking lava away, which would be a bad thing. Hmmmm. Come to think of it, I did take some lava sand home to CT years ago, and it was about that time I started getting serious about moving to HI. Madame Pele%26#39;s influence, maybe?

Believe it or not, I find that people are thrilled by the shell lei that you get free from Hilo Hattie or can buy at ABC three for 99 cents. If you go to the Swap Meet in Kahului you%26#39;ll undoubtedly find good souvenir-y stuff, too. I%26#39;ve found cowries at Ho%26#39;okipa, but I understand it%26#39;s not a great place for haoles these days.

To add to the list of other ideas, we sent personalized postcards from the birdman on Front St in Lahaina. He takes your picture with lots of parrots sitting on you, then you come back the next day to pick up the postcards. It%26#39;s semi-expensive, $25 for 15 postcards I think, but everybody we sent them to loved them. It%26#39;s a definite souvenir for the refridgerator!

The bird pics are fantastic!! Great idea you gave! We, too, got bird pics but ours were on the road to Hana in the Garden of Eden.

How often do your friends get to see you with 6 giant parrots on you?! Those are my favorite shots from our trip...well, next to the one of us on the slopes of Haleakala, in which I was perched on my BF%26#39;s shoulders, doing an arabesque on the bike!!

Now, those kind of pics will inspire your friends to visit Maui!

this makes me laugh because I am STILL finding sand in stuff that went to Kaua%26#39;i with us last summer!! My swimsuit still has some sand trapped between the outer and inner layers. Took out our water shoes a few weekends ago - they were filled with Kaua%26#39;i sand. Got out the bag of snorkel gear. Yep. Bag had a good collection of SAND in the bottom. And the sand toys that my children INSISTED on bringing home??? We got those out and found.... chunks of old, smooth coral (bet you thought I was going to say sand)!! Didn%26#39;t even realize they were there! The kids had used them to decorate a sand castle and I guess they got shoved into the bag with everything else!!

What I want to know is, how do I get RID of all the sand!!! ??? LOL!

Hale 'O Kuawa vs. Sealodge F1 vs. Sealodge F4

I got an incredible response to my first post on this site about where to stay in Kauai. Thanks to all of you, we%26#39;re down to three choices about where to stay for our one week visit in August. Now, I%26#39;m hoping you can help us go from three choices to one.

We know the basics about the locations and amenities. I have two main questions. Has anyone stayed in F1 or F4 recently? And if you were staying on the north shore in August for ~$125 a night, which of these three would you choose? Or would you stay somewhere totally different?

Thanks so much. And I promise to pay you all back with a trip report when this is all over.

Hale 'O Kuawa vs. Sealodge F1 vs. Sealodge F4

Although I haven%26#39;t been insideany of those units they all look pretty good for your budget. I%26#39;d probably opt for Sealodge because of the ocean views (we%26#39;re staying in another unit there at the end of May). And personally I wouldn%26#39;t want to be on the first floorso I%26#39;d choose F-4.

Hale 'O Kuawa vs. Sealodge F1 vs. Sealodge F4

We just stayed at Sealodge D8//beautiful views!! Pretty cozy and quiet//didnt see the inside of F bldg//We walked up 2 flights//felt like a little treehouse. Waves crashing all night

We stayed in F-8 a couple of years ago. Just make sure the one you pick faces the ocean. Believe there is one in that building that faces the pool.

Also make sure you get some breezes from the location. Sealodge units (except a very few) don%26#39;t have A/C and in August it can get hot. Read reviews!

    Hi,

I have tons of photos of Hale%26#39;O Kuawa. PM me if you need some specifics.

3chis, I%26#39;ve seen your pictures and trip reports. They%26#39;re a great argument for Hale. Especially since there is no evidence on the internet that anyone has ever stayed in either of those Sealodge units.

My bad on my earlier post. I see that F1 and F4 are both ground floor units. I%26#39;d be concerned about privacy. and since Building F sits back from the bluff, the views there won%26#39;t be as good as the other buildings in Sealodge.
