Car Hire in Maui

I have read several threads about car hire in Maui and everyone seems to say pick up a car at the airport and have it for the duration of the holiday. This is fine. However I have a question relating to insurance on rental cars in Maui.

When hiring a car does insurance come as part of the package? In the UK when you hire a car the insurance is included in the base price and I assumed this was the case in the USA until I went to put in a bid at priceline and it said insurance was not included..........this made me worry that insurance might not be included in the quotes I had received direct from the dollar and thrifty rent a car websites. Can anyone explain how things work in Maui and whether it is just priceline which has this separate insurance?

Also, any recommendations of cheap and or local car hire would be great.

hey holidayjems! i%26#39;ve been to scotland, beautiful country!

to answer your question:

you should first check with your auto insurance company at home and see if they cover you in a rental. most insurance companies here do and that ';add on'; insurance with the rental company is just a way to make more money.

if you don%26#39;t have it at home, then you will most likely have to purchase insurance separately.

just a few tips...in the US, we go on vacation, not holiday; and we rent cars, not hire them. :-)

j/k with you...hope you have a great time!

You may also find that you have coverage thru your credit card. I know our Discover and Visa both provide adequate coverage, if we ever needed it--thankfully, we have never had to test their coverage!

thanks for the advice guys. i shall call my insurance here and see what they say.

i thought it might just be priceline.com who exclude the minimum insurance from their quotes - you know cos you are bidding and all.

and thanks for the jargon tips LOL

Greetings from Oxfordshire. I went through exactly this loop last year and am about to take the same route for Feb.

Hire via someone like Hawaii drive-O.com who buy in bulk from Avis as locals and pass on (some of) the savings. Pick up is as per normal from Avis.

Go elsewhere, like Extrasure.co.uk, and get an annual policy. Mine was even cheaper than a one-off fortnight%26#39;s cover.

Start the cover from your first day rental/hiring. Next time take your hols a couple of weeks earlier and you can use the last fortnight%26#39;s cover for ';free';. Doing it this way I got my I got my insurance cover for 拢45 per year.

If you do a search for entries under my name you can see the history of how this came about - I%26#39;ve not figured out how to insert links. I%26#39;m not saying it is the absolute cheapest way but it may give you ideas. I would ask that you don%26#39;t insure with the company that hires Michael Winner fot he telly ads as a matter of principle.

The car rental insurance that you get from the agencies is costly, but means no hassle regarding the car.

Hawaii is a ';no fault state'; which means anything has to be paid prior to your leaving the island.

Definitely check with your auto policy at home, your credit card company, and even consider getting a blanket ';trip insurance'; policy which can cover you for auto and any other incidents that might arise - such as trip interruption, auto, emergencies and so on.

The car rental insurance available through your credit card is only availble for US or Canadian credit card holders.

You will have a separate charge for insurance. Be pepared for it. If you are under 25 years of age, it may be very expensive.

I believe there are UK-based auto rental companies that can get you a full quote. Do you belong to an auto club like AAA? They have packages for foreign drivers.
