Oahu vs Big Island

We (two adults and 2 kids) are arriving on Jan 23 to Honolulu. We already have a package booked on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island but it starts on 1/27. So we are thinking what would be the best place to stay from 1/23-1/27?

Would it better to stay in HNL or fly directly to Big Island and explore other parts of the island?

Thank you.

Oahu vs Big Island

Have you been to Oahu? There is a lot to do there. You could spend 4 nights in HNL easily filling your days with an array of activities. There is so much to see and do.

Oahu vs Big Island

No, we haven%26#39;t been there yet. Could you please recommend me any good places to go with two kids?

Their ages make a difference. Bishop Museum, the Punchbowl Cemetary (great views of Honolulu from the rim) Pearl Harbor, day trip to the North Shore or just explore Waikiki, you should see Oahu once.

Lots of info:

first, you don%26#39;t say how long the Kohala package lasts.

If you intend to explore the volcanoes area, then it is a LONG day trip with kids for a short time, so consider staying on that side before going to Kohala.

Honolulu/Waikiki and the Big Island are apples and oranges. One is a city, with highrises, and noisy traffic all night long, and tons of action. The Big Island is more rural, way lower density, much more laid back, but with a lot of driving needed and long distances.

So ... what are you looking for?

Just remember that only Honolulu/Waikiki is a ';city, with highrises, and noisy traffic all night long, and tons of action';, not the ENTIRE island.

That is very true.

However most of the legal visitor accommodations are in Honolulu, and all but two of the real hotels/resorts, no?

As for the traffic, the quietest part of Oahu has more traffic than the busiest part of the Big Island, in my experience, and all of Oahu has a different vibe. Plus it is much more built up, whereas on the Big Island you can drive 100 miles and pass through nothing but extremely small old fashioned towns.

Very different experience. I do like Oahu, Waikiki not so much.
