safe to swim in the sea?

With all the shark in the area, is it safe to swim in the sea?

safe to swim in the sea?

Well, if you see a shark, it probably isn%26#39;t safe. We have been swimming at many beaches in Maui and Oahu and haven%26#39;t seen a shark. Just use basic precautions....like don%26#39;t swim in murk cloudy water, or with bleeding sores/cuts.

safe to swim in the sea?

Safe as you can make it with due diligence and observaces.

Remove anything that sparkles - jewelry or even sparkly swimsuits make you look like a fish.

Dawn and dusk not the best time to go in.

Always check the conditions at any beach prior to entering the water.

If nobody else is in the water, stay out, unless you are at a beach with lifeguards and have queried them about your concerns/general safety -

Do the math...

One or two shark bite per year divided by thousands of people in the water in Hawaii every day. Bigger risk driving to the beach!

You%26#39;ve seen too many movies!

Here is a Wikipedia list of fatal, unprovoked shark attacks in US waters by decade.

Hawaii is not a leading site although some have happened.

LesRose, are you suggesting that one remove a sparkly swimsuit before heading into the water?

Never had a shark encounter but there is at least one attack per year in the waters around Maui. The sharks don%26#39;t discriminate between visitors and residents so in that way, your chances are really good. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend going to Maui if you aren%26#39;t going to enjoy a couple of hours of snorkeling or just floating in the ocean. Again, avoid swimming at night, alone or in murky water.

I think the jewelry suggestion makes a lot of sense. And I have always gone in wearing my sterling silver and not thought about it. From now on I will remove it!

First, you must understand and respect the power of the shore breaks in Hawaii. All those waves travel thousands of miles and unleash their beautiful and awesome energy at the shore.

Most Maui injuries are sunburn!, sand in your swimsuit!, and stepping on vana - urchins!

Even though there was a jellyfish warning posted at Maluaka Beach this morning, we were in the water, without incident - we don%26#39;t have the monthly swarm like Oahau.

Last serious shark attack on Maui was 10/29/07 at Wailea Beach per the Global Shark Attack File. Maui Ocean Center says 90% of the world%26#39;s sharks have been harvested from the world%26#39;s oceans since 1950.

I just know that the sparkly things issue comes up often, makes sense. I forget it all the time though. (biggest problem I have had was ruining a sterling silver ankle bracelet from the chlorine in the pool.

Julauf - lol - guess that means Little Beach.

Honu Lover - that%26#39;s it.

In short - thousands of people hit the water on the islands every day and when all the numbers are taken into consideration it is much safer than what most folks dive into every day as a commute to and from work.

Honu_Ohana,

thats a scary scary web page.

Oh. Odd thing is I found it reassuring. Not that many in a decade, not that many in Hawaii. Actually, I remember the Pinellas County one--used to live there. There was speculation the man jumped in off his dock and was unfortunately where there was a school of mullet, which the sharks eat. Water is murky there in the intrcoastal waterway.

The descriptions are sobering. But they do reimnforce the warnings about time of day, clarity of water, staying away from spearfishermen, etc.
