staying at Best western Ocean front inn for 3 nights from 29th April Have read some posts for similar stay and appreciate the great beach nearby But coming from UK would like to see something of the island! can we do that by local bus service such as the iao valley, heritage gardens in Wailuku or would car hire be the answer? Now in Fiji en route to honolulu and have enjoyed all so much not least due to tripadvisor Thank you

You definitely need to rent a car.

If you want to get out and explore the island you will definitely need to rent a car. There really is no suitable public transportation service on the island. You should have no trouble reserving even at this late date. Give Priceline a shot. You should be able to get a convertible for about $22 a day - a compact for $13 or 14 a day.

What company rents the cars for under $20 per day? My trip is in August, but I could not find anything under $36 per day.

Yes, you will want to reserve a car NOW.

Um...are you sure you want to stay at the Best Western in Kihei? Very small rooms, no view. Busy restaurant oceanfront on same property. I%26#39;d arrive, take a look, try elsewhere -- maybe Mana Kai Maui (condo-tel) which is directly ON Keawakapu Beach.

Another vote for renting a car.

With tours or public transportation your time will NOT be determined by you... you will spend time waiting for the bus, waiting to transfer to another bus, waiting for other passengers or tourists, waiting for the taxi to arrive etc.

Considering where you are staying and what you want to do - rent a car.

Re:rates for car rentals =

AA ALoha can be found at hawaiicarrental.com and DiscountHawaiicarrental.com is another - depdning on time of travel there are rates at 30 per day

Reservations only, no pre-pay or credit card needed to reserve

Maui may not be the best island for you. Without a car, Oahu would be your best bet.

I agree

Rent a car.

Cateile- We are going to be in Maui end of July 1st week of Aug. and are getting a compact (no not a 2 door speck) from Maui Cruisers for 23 dollars a day inclusive of taxes.It%26#39;s on their website and just called and got it all set up. We have used priceline before and were successful at $15 then tack on taxes but that was Oahu where there are more rental cars.

Aloha
