sunny sunday fun Kauai Style

Wow ! We have been having some marvelous weather, and believe me, all of us, residents and visitors alike are really happy.

Plans were to head up north, and join the Sierra Club for a kayaking trash pick up on the hanalei river. And the weather kahuna cooperated 100 %

12 people, and 6 kayaks, and almost zero trash, and I mean zero. That river and its banks were not a problem.

Paddling up the river, well past the bridge, until it just became too shallow, we looked and looked and were unable (our kayak ) to find one piece of human discard.

The visibility was unlimited, and we could see a waterfall cascading down Mt. Waialeale.

Heading back down, we stayed more to the center and the current helped us along with very little effort.

The rest of the group were continuing on past kayak kauai, to continue their search, and have lunch at the park near the river entrance to hanalei bay.

We had a lunch appointment, and pealed off, as to not be late. It was at the Mediteranean Gormet near tunnels.

Well, we were plenty early, and thirsty, so we stopped in hanalei town at Kalypso%26#39;s. What a friendly a fun place. Had a great time with the young lady bartender, and met a really neat couple from laguna beach, who were soon to be moving over.

Wife was with twins...not yet on final approach.

Then, it was time to meet our luncheon date, and we arrived at the mediteranean gormet....our appointment was unable to make it, but no worries.

We had a great lunch with fantastic service, talked story with the new bar tender ( new form the mainland and also teaches 3rd grade here )and the owner.

We also found out something that might be kind of neat for those staying up on the north shore..

The MEDITERRANEAN now has a LUAU.

Tuesday nights, 6:00 pm, reservations required, and

limited to 80 people.

Great and tasty bufet featuring traditional luau foods. I have the menu...and it looks tasteeee.

Fire dancer, and hawaiian and tahitian dancers.

And a complementary maitai, beer or wine.

Cost for adults is $ 69.00..kids are less.

Just a thought, as it would save a long drive to the east or south shores, if you are staying up north.

We really like the place, and the employees, and the food, and the drinks, and the ocean view.

Guess that is about it. It was great being up on the north shore, and just enjoying all its beauty.

What a creation.

With all of our un-sunshine of winter, it was an absolute pleasure to return to that spectacular and lush green treasure.

Seconded. This weekend of Flash Sunshine instead of Flash floods was very very welcome.

Do you think all the rain washed the trash out to sea or, hopefully folks are being more careful where they throw stuff?

Shanty,

We discussed just what you said, and we think that people are just very conscious about tossing out trash. Those using the hanalei are taking care of it.

Totally 100% different than the mess that greeted us last week at nawiliwili harbor ( that was bad ), and it was NOT from the visitors.

We had never seen much trash on any of the previous times that we kayaked the Hanalei. Also, the kayaks were donated to the sierra club by kayak kauai yesterday.

Thank you Kayak Kauai.

Hope you all get a chance to kayak up the Hanalei, it really is quite beautiful. And easy, especially drifting and being assisted by the down stream current. ( Stay in the center when returning ).

When paddling up river, stay close to the banks, as it is easier, due to less current on the sides.

Kayak Kauai for solo paddles, and Kayak Hanalei for guided paddles up the river, back down to the bay and over to Hideways for snorkeling.

Pleased to hear that our on island visitors as well as the residents are loving the sunshine !

Hold that sunshine. We are on our way!

Great news about a luau at Med Grill. Perhaps I will see if I can go when I am there in a few weeks. At least I can stop by and check it out.

I am hearing some rumors that HBR is also trying to get a luau together for the summers. The ex manager of Pacific Cafe is involved. He is wanting to test this out for the homeowners meeting in May to see if we would go for it. I%26#39;ll let you know. It would most likely be the same group that performs at Med%26#39; Grill I bet you, just on a Saturday nights. That would be exciting.

Joan,

The group at the Med gormet is Fire Knife dancer, Coppin Colburn and his family. All locals.

Kinda reminds me of the tahaitian group on Taha%26#39;a in the leeward islands of Tahiti. Big family and friends, and it was loads of fun, and good feelings.

And fantastic food....outstanding.

They were having a great time, and that was shared back from the audience...which was small, maybe 40 or 50 people...

I would also like to get up there on a tuesday night, but drinking, and also the late night drive home, on a work night, is not a good plan.

Yes, indeed, work is the curse of the fun loving class.
