North Shore Lodging - Hanalei Bay Resort or........

Access to things is important - although I can justify $250 (or less), + tax, + cleaning for a night in paradise, I need to keep my wife comfy if her back acts up....she won%26#39;t be able to last as long as me and the kids, as she had her 2nd discectomy not long ago, so we would prefer to be able to walk to Hanalei Bay, if possible, so she could retire to a comfortable room without having to worry about picking us up in the car (no schlepping around in Paradise allowed!).

2 adults and 2 children - 11 and 19 , who both surf, and I am learning.

We%26#39;ll be mostly in the water (surfing/kayaking/snorkeling) or on trails. Maybe a little swimming pool, tennis, etc. - but doubt it. Nightlife not an issue for us.

Walking to the foodstore/ or a laid back restaurant would be a nice but not necessary option. We cannot spend a fortune on food, so we won%26#39;t have more than 1 meal (if any) at Bali Hai, I am sure. We hope to have a place where we can cook (and maybe grill), which seems doable just about everywhere we looked.

A beautiful view of H. Bay or some other body of water with mountains as well....would be very nice.

Please help me decide if I should be in Hanalei Bay Resort or somewhere else nearby. The places to the East, i.e., SeaLodge, are right on the beach, but it is Anini beach, not Hanalei bay, where I think we’ll want to be mostly. HBR seems to cover all our needs, and Halanei Colony sounds great, but it maybe out of the way of conveniences.

If H. Bay Resort is walkable to the Bay and other conveniences, it is my leader so far.

We would like a fresh and attractive place for our last 6 nights in paradise.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sealodge is not ON the beach. All condos in Princeville are high on the bluff overlooking either Anini Reef as Sealodge does, Hideaway Beach or Hanalei Bay.

Look at this arial of HBR. You can see the beach at the bottom of the hill. The beach below is NOT Hanalei Bay Beach area. It is called Puu Poa. It%26#39;s a small beach. You could walk over rocks and a small river to get to the bay but I wouldn%26#39;t if I were you. I know you want to surf and if you are bringing a board you walk down the path and to the left is the best surfing spot.

So to answer your questions there are no condos ON Hanalei Bay. Only very expensive houses but from HBR you can see the bay.

For the nicest units go to:

Only rent a privately owned unit.

If you need help finding a nice one I am the one to email.

North Shore Lodging - Hanalei Bay Resort or........

We just got yesterday from a Princeville stay. I enjoyed Princeville and the hikes to Anini and the beach blow Sea Lodge, but they are hikes and not walks. They were too steep for my lady and she has no back problems.

If we were to go back again I think we would prefer to rent a house in Hanalei proper. Driving to beaches is likely to be a fact of life on the North Shore. Having a convenient spot that is walkable to restaurants and markets is something that I would go fore. We spoke with many repeat visitors when visiting some of the pubs that take this approach.

Cheers, RickG

Your situation is really a tough one. The only way you will find a place to stay where you can reasonably walk to Hanalei Bay is in Hanalei itself and it will be really hard to find something nice in your price range.

No matter where you stay, you are going to have to drive in order to engage in all the activities on your list. Hanalei Bay may be good for surfing, but you will have to go to Hideaways, Tunnels, Kepuhi or Ke%26#39;e to snorkel. You can kayak right out of Hanalei on the Hanalei River (and out into the bay conditions permitting). You will also have to drive to the best hiking trails.

HBR is a good choice, but the Bali Hai Restaurant you mentioned is closed indefintely just FYI. If you don%26#39;t need a pool, Hanalei Bay Villas has some reasonably priced 2 and 3 BR units, although many of them require walking up and down steps, which could be an issue for your wife. The lower numbered units have nice views of Hanalei Bay and the trail down to Hideaways Beach is right across the street.

We stayed at this house last summer...nothing fancy, but had everything we needed. It is about two blocks from the beach and the same from town. The location was great and it is in your price range. There are two bedrooms and would sleep 4 easily. The bathroom only has a shower...if that is a concern for you. There are other houses in Hanalei in the same price range...you just have to do a little research.

If there are any issues with your back I would not attempt the trail down to Hideaways...sort of steep at best. Best to find a place that does not have a hike from parking lot to unit and/or hills and many steps too...a home in Hanalei would probably fit best...

Bayou -- I%26#39;m so glad you liked Puanani. We rented it several years ago and thought it was great. Comfortable, quiet, walking distance to food, shopping and, of course, beautiful Hanalei Bay.

Smiles -- In your case, your 11 and 19 year olds would have to share a room with twin beds, but if they don%26#39;t mind, Puanani might be a good option for you.

Hanalei Bay is an easy choice for you. I have researched the lodging many times and $250 is very do-able! Depending on when you%26#39;re going there may not be any surfing. But if there%26#39;s no surfing the snorkeling will be good at the beaches previously mentioned.

I agree with everyone above. Having just stayed at Sealodge it is pretty steep steps wise. Unless you are on the bottom floor. 1 bedroom is very small. If you are interested in Hanalei Bay Resort I would pm jebett shehas the best info. Most of our eating has been at informal places or grilling/cooking at our condo at the Cliffs. Renting a house in Hanalei or Annini would prob be a really good idea. Im sure the kids would love it.

I have stayed at HBR twice and a rental home in Hanalei once. IMO Hanalei wins hands down. HBR has lovely grounds and great views, but personaly from what you described about your family, I think staying in Hanalei would suit your needs perfectly. You will have a beautiful beach to walk to (with easy access for your wife), along with restaurants, shops, biking some entertainment, surfing and kayaking are all within walking distance. I would think your wife would feel less isolated.

When we were staying at HBR we spent much more time in the car as opposed to staying in Hanalei.

Good Luck
