Airfare woes

I%26#39;ve been watching airfare for a while and it just kept creeping up. Then it was steeply going up. It was scaring me. Then I found a ';good deal'; in the midst of all the scary prices.

I bought that good deal about a week ago.

Today I found a flight for 2/3 the price and it made me sick.

The only things that kept me happy about my purchase was that when I bought, the chances of the prices going up were higher than the prices going down, and also, when I tried to look into this cheaper price it appeared to be selling out so I may never have been able to get it for that lower price anyway.

Just wanted to share my misfortune... I%26#39;m usually such a good deal finder.

How can I stay excited about my upcoming vacation when I feel like I just threw away $300? It just really put a damper on my day and my vacation planning.

Airfare woes

I understand your disappointment. It%26#39;s tough to see something like that happen. It%26#39;s often a roll of the dice, and if the airfare was within the budget you set, you%26#39;re still in great shape.

This part of your planning is in the past, stop watching airfares. Concentrate on what%26#39;s left to plan, especially all the fun things you want to do.

If money is going to be tight, take a look through the forums and you%26#39;ll find all sorts of great information on free or low-cost things to do, great food at low prices (or just preparing some of your own meals), and all the fun the island offers.

I%26#39;ve done my share of trips to Maui and Kauai on tight budgets, and those are some of the most memorable trips.

Airfare woes

Some airlines will let you refare, though will charge you for it - I recall something along the lines of $150, so you could recoup half your ';loss'; - but you%26#39;ll never get the lowest price.

Try priceline for your hotel - one way of recouping your $300.

Enjoy Maui

You book your airfare and then you don%26#39;t look at airfares again until you are ready to book another trip. Why stress yourself out over this.

I agree, I have the same mentality as you and it drives me insane. You just have to stop looking at it and plan other things for your trip or it drive ya crazy!

I booked eight months ago before the good deals started showing up! And I%26#39;m not a wealthy person. But, I%26#39;ve paid for it all now and can sit back and look forward to a reunion with my beloved Hawaii. Money gets spent - one way or the other - and this is such a worthy cause...

you could start accumulating FF miles...this will be 5 years in a row flying from east to Hawaii...in first class no less.

get one of the affinity CCs that earns miles. we use DL branded AMEX.

Wow! You must really accumulate the miles. I use AMEX DL too but usually have about enough to get me to the west coast only. From there I look for good Hawaiian Airlines deals. Also, I usually spend a night on the west coast coming and going so I don%26#39;t have to take the infamous red-eye out of Hawaii or have jet lag so bad. But First Class would take some of the sting out of it. LOL! Do you have to start calling at midnight about 331 days out to use your miles to get all the way to Hawaii? I%26#39;ve tried that before and just can%26#39;t stomach it - so I use the method above.

If you%26#39;ve booked directly with an airline and their rate falls more than the %26#39;re-ticketing fee%26#39;, call them up; get re-ticketed; and get vouchers for the difference.

We booked with AA nine months ahead for February 2009 and the rate fell a month before we left for Hawaii. I%26#39;ve just booked for February 2010, applying $220 pp in vouchers to our fares.

Cateile - ';How can I stay excited about my upcoming vacation when I feel like I just threw away $300? It just really put a damper on my day and my vacation planning.';

Very sound advice thus far.

If you booked what you thought was a reasonable rate there is nothing wrong with that. We booked our upcoming flight last July - the prices went up, then down -

Now what to do? Jump up and down - your%26#39;re going! Save money on the car, on the lodgings. Have a wonderful trip!!

I have been watching and repricing my trip to Maui everyday for about 3 months, and I was getting discouraged, then yesterday I went on and the trip was a 1000 less than what it was. I booked it,cant wait to go. I think you have to research it everyday and be ready to book at any time!
