I will be visiting Oahu in April and my husband is in the military and we are trying to decide where to stay. I heard the Halo koa is nice but the beach is really crowded in that area so we looked at staying in the beach cottages but cant find any reviews on them and we dont know anyone who stayed there. Can anyone help? Thanks Angela
MWR beach cotteges at Nimitz Beach
I%26#39;ve never stayed at those ones but have stayed at bellows beach cottages at Bellows air force station. They are wonderful. They sit right on the beach and the beach is the best beach i%26#39;ve ever seen. I%26#39;ve also stayed at the Hale Koa 3 times and it is nice too. We have been during X-mas and Spring Break and i didn%26#39;t find the beach awful crowded and those are busy times. It was convienent to be within walking distance to everything in the evenings. This time we are going to stay at Bellows and just get away from it all. My husband in in Iraq so when he gets back it will be nice to have a very layed back quiet trip and that is what Bellows will allow. Plus it is cheaper and we can eat in some so that will save.
MWR beach cotteges at Nimitz Beach
I agree with harv1631, the beach is not crowded in front of the Hale Koa.
Sorry can%26#39;t help you with the cottages at Nimitz Beach, never stayed there.
Other options for us military folks are the cottages at the Pacific Missle Range on Kauai (that beach is all yours pretty much due to the very limited access to the installation), Kilauea Military Camp inside the Volcano National Park on the Big Island (no beach but a killer location if you like active volcanos) and as harv1631 mentioned, Bellows.
We just came back in July. I love the Hale Koa and have stayed there many times. This last trip we decided to stay 4 nights at Hale Koa, and the other 3 @ Bellows Beach. Totally different than the cottages at Nimitz. If you can%26#39;t get into Bellows, I would spend the whole 7 days at the Hale Koa.
The beach is definately not crowded there. We went the last time when it was very busy, but not the beach. The beach is huge compared to the west of Waikiki. The grounds are wonderful and spacious. April will be wonderful!!!
I posted a review on Tripadvisor of Bellows Beach. I also have some photos and can provide more info to you. If you get into the Hale Koa, request an ocean view... better yet, spent the few extra dollars and try to get the ocean front. Chances are you will be in the tower that just got renovated.
Hale Koa definately is more romantic. And the food it very good at their main restaurant. You can%26#39;t beat the prices! (Avoid Bibas...more expensive and not as good). Being at the Hale Koa will put you in the center of exploring the area. If you head to Nimitz your drive will be LONG to any of the sites.
Bellows is remote, but incredibly beautiful. Try to get a renovated cabin... an ocean front if you can. Just let me say it is HARD to get into Bellows. They books up 6-12 months in advance.
This is what I do.... I book all 7 nights at Hale Koa. Then I keep calling back Bellows and trying to get the last 3 there. Last time I had to call every day for months before I got those nights. The Hale Koa will let you change your reservation. Bellows is only $80 per night for a renovated cabin.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I have lots of pictures of both!!! I know where Nimitz cabins are and you don%26#39;t want to be there.... especially not for a romantic vacation.
Spent a few nights at the cottages on Nimitz Beach years ago. They were pretty bare bones, but they do sit right on the beach. I mean, 30 or 40 feet from the mean high water mark. Keep in mind that they are a long drive from just about anything, so do all your food shopping before you get there. Don%26#39;t expect anything luxurious, as it%26#39;s basically a concrete block house with a couple of bedrooms. If I recall correctly, most of them are duplexes.
You are much better off with Hale Koa or Bellows.
Nimitz Beach is too far away from everything.
Lots of Oahu info:

I%26#39;ve stayed at both the Hale Koa and the Nimitz beach cottages. It all depends on what you are looking for.
Nimitz was great for a 10 day family reunion. We had 4 cottages, bbq%26#39;d every night, and had lots of room for the kids to run around.
For the 2 of us, the Hale Koa is a great place right in the heart of Waikiki. It is right on the beach, and we had a beautiful view from our room.
Either way, make sure you peruse the MWR list- we got a great price on a sunset dinner cruise and a shark cage dive.
I%26#39;ve stayed at the cottages on Nimitz, at Bellows and the Hale Koa and enjoyed all three.
The beach at the Hale Koa is very wide/deep? - plenty of room is what I%26#39;m trying to say. It%26#39;s a great beach. We walk up and use the beach there even if we%26#39;re staying elsewhere. Very nice pools, snack bar and bar right by the pools. For lounging by the pool or beach with a cool drink you can%26#39;t beat it.
We stayed at the cabins on Nimitz in April 07. They were in the process of renovating them at that time. I really liked the cabin, the beach is rocky, not really usable for any typical beach activities. If you want solitude this is a good place, if you are taking children they won%26#39;t have much to do.
We love Bellows. The beach is great. There are a lot of trees it%26#39;s like a small forest next to the beach. There is a nice snack bar, they have all types of gear to rent. One trip we stayed part of the time at the Hale Koa and the rest at Bellows, that was a great trip.
