Surf lessons on Big Island?

My husband and I are planning a trip for late March or early April and would love to try surfing lessons. Would our timing be good for this? We%26#39;ll probably be using Hilton points to stay at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Kohala coast, so any suggestions nearby would be awesome. Thanks!

Kahalu%26#39;u in Keauhou is the only place on that side. Newbies are generally not welcome at established surf sites, not at all, but that is one place where lessons are given.

There are only a handful of licensed surf companies here and the lessons are at Kahaluu Beach. You might want to try the one at the corner of Lunapule Road and Walua Road in Kona. They actually spend time with you on land before taking you to the ocean. Their name escapes me but you can%26#39;t miss them, you will see all the surfboards there.

bottom line.....it will be an hours drive each way from the Hilton... to Kahaluu beach park, there is no surf north of the airport.... suggest The Outrigger hotel or Royal Kona

Thanks so much - we will look into both of those spots. I don%26#39;t think an hour drive will be a big problem for us.

TT would that be Surf Lessons Hawaii LLC?

That is where I send people, nice folks. The drive is lovely and well worth doing.

If you are spending any time on oahu or the other islands you may want to consider doing surf lessons there. The breaks here on the Big Island are very inconsistent, reefy, and localized. More for intermediate and above, but doable if this is your only option.
