We have recently returned from a wonderful 2 weeks in Maui and definitely plan to go back sometime.
Although we love getting away from winter, we have more vacation time and flexibility in the summer.
What are the pros and cons of one over the other? I hear the weather is almost the same, though windier, and no whales.
I would love to hear others%26#39; opinions.
Summer or winter? Which time of year better in Maui?
Hello Willy!
Well for me I will only go in the winter because I go for the whales, I love whale watching and I love leaving here when its cold and raining and arriving to tropical weather!!
Summer or winter? Which time of year better in Maui?
willynilly - we were there for two weeks in December also!
Pros and cons - weather may be a bit more consistent in summer, more kids in summer, prices for flights and lodging are higher in winter, winter has whales.
Well, we went in summer once and now are going in winter.
There are different activities to do in summer vs. winter. Winter is clearly whales. However, summer you can rent jet skis and go parasailing too.
Don%26#39;t know if that makes a difference to you but I thought I%26#39;d chime in.
Fall, specifically late Sept through early Nov, is my favorite time (yes I read that the OP has more time to go during the summer). Fewer people, lower prices and the ocean is at it%26#39;s warmest.
Of course, I can see whales anytime I want from Dec-Mar here, so that%26#39;s not a draw for me.
We usually go to get out of the winter weather and we LOVE the whales! I would never go again in July or August, for me it%26#39;s just too hot. If the whales were there I would pick end of May/June or late Sept./Oct. as perfect times. But we are ruled by the whales and our lousy weather! :-)
Shhhhh!!!!! Summer is our well kept secret. For us it is the only time we can take more than a week and we love being away for 2 so we have gone the end of August the last three years.
Weather is about 85, very little rain, none at all last time. The end of Aug seems to be quiet. Lots of parking, able to get into restaurants with out a big wait. One day I would like to go in the winter but for now this is great.
We always enjoy a wonderful spring break skiing here in BC.
If you want the least amount of crowds the first two weeks of December are the quietest. Plus rates usually go up Dec 15th.
Summer you get more big families (yours, mine and ours).
I would check for special concerts, entertainers or events that could be of interest to you and maybe co-ordinate them into your schedule.
Summer is quite a bit hotter so I would be looking to stay in Kaanapali to Kahana area. Even napili.
Winter I would stay Lahaina, Kehei or Wailea.
Thanks for your responses so far.
We have summers off and only the 2 weeks at Christmas as our options, which is why we are considering a summer trip next time; we just want more time in Maui!
I was interested in the recommendation from jimgloria to stay in specific areas summer or winter. Can you tell me why? Is it cooler or windier on one end or another?
Also is the Maalea area even windier in the summer?
We stayed there last time and it was windy on some days, but bearable.
Thanks for your help!
We stay in South Kihei somewhere between Aug 12 and 30 for 2 weeks. Depends on the calendarr year.
We have no complaints about it being to windy or to hot. We find this location central as we love to explore the whole island.
How early in the year can you visit? May/June is lovely, whereas the closer you get to autumn, the more likely you%26#39;ll have Kona winds and heat. (I have the A/C bills from our condo to prove it!)
