Traveling with 3 teenagers in October

Happy cold day from Minnesota!

I have been reading through the Maui forum and there is so much good information here but I thought I would put out my details and see if anyone can help steer me in the right direction. I am looking for ideas on what to do, where to go, and where to stay.

Here%26#39;s the scoop. I have 3 teenagers, 13,17,19, and my wife - who is 29, of course - and me, late 40%26#39;s. We are looking for a 2-3 bedroom rental for the week of Oct 10-17, 2009. What kind of weather is normal for that time of year?

We want to stay as close as possible to a beach since the kids will be going there a lot and I love the views and sounds of the ocean. Our rental budget is around $250-$300 a night. Having a condo with hotel resort privileges would be great.

Are there any ';don%26#39;t miss'; activities for the teenagers? None of us have ever been to the Islands before so we are really excited for the trip and we will do a lot of pre-planning to make the trip as pleasurable as possible.

Thanks for any and all help! Jeff

Traveling with 3 teenagers in October

You picked a wonderful time to come to Maui. October is my favorite month. Still very warm and the water is at it%26#39;s warmest. I%26#39;ve been there when it has poured rain in the month of Oct. and when it has been very dry. Hard to tell. Take each day as it comes.

With teenagers, 2 areas come to mind. Either Kaanapali or Kihei. Kaanapali has lots of hotels and condo%26#39;s and lots of action. Kihei is a beach town with condo%26#39;s more on the economical side and lots of action. I think Kaanapali has more beach front properties, although there are some nice ones in Kihei. Can%26#39;t go wrong with either.

Try zip-lines, surfing lessons, snorkeling, boogy boarding for the teenagers. There are also some nice hikes if they are into that.

Have a great time and happy planning!!

The only condos that I know of where you get ';condo with hotel resort privileges'; would be Wailea Beach Villas (some, not all) but they won%26#39;t fit your budget. Although I would also ask if you could define that question a bit, since majority of condos offer so much more than simply a %26#39;home away from home%26#39;. You might want to look into Westin Kaanapali Villas however - unsure of the rate, but the resort feeling would be there.

Tops on your list would be to decide West or South Maui. I think teens would most likely enjoy either end of Maui, but many sugggest Kaanapali since it offers more of a lively atmosphere. Kaanapali is a great beach, but for touring the rest of the island can take longer - We took two teen to Kihei and they absolutely loved it. Most two bedroom condos will accomodate up to six persons, depending on the unit of course, and one may have to sleep on the pull-out but most kids don%26#39;t mind.

Take a look at wizardpub.com and view the aerial photos of places - there are brief summaries/review of each and frankly the rates posted can be improved upon. Read the topic on the lefthand column here uner Know Before You Go - and the reveiws of properties that have been posted by TA travelers.

Weather in October? wonderful

The number one activity that I would suggest for teens would be surfing lessons. Second would be a snorkel excursion.

Lesrose is right the Westin Villas would be perfect for your crew. A 2 bedroom lockoff, right on the beach, free shuttles to Whaler%26#39;s Village and Lahaina. Check www.redweek.com. I%26#39;m seen some killer deals offered there.

you might have a tough time frinding a 3 bedroom with resort privileges for 250-300 per nite

the tax would put the 250 closer to the 300 then you might want it to be

weatherwise --- its a great time of year

as posted --- zip lines -- snorkeling -- trip to the volcano --- lahaina --- west maui drive to iao needle and of course the road to hana

Wish I was 29 again. But no worries, cause I%26#39;m only 30.

I suggest you stay in Kihei. The Pacific Ocean is number 1! Your teenagers will love bodysurfing. And in South Maui there are some great places to eat. I hope that helps a bit ';JSO';.

P.S. Keep the wife away from Caddy, OK?

That is why I love tripadvisor. In a couple hours I get all this great advice! LesRose, I was wondering about hotel priveliges because there might be more pools for the kids to explore and hang out at. Not important enough to dictate where we would stay.

I think the priority for us will be something on the beach so I will search for that type of condo around the Kihei area and see what I find. Now all I have to do is figure out how the heck I wait for the next 9 months before we go...

Kihei is great for teens. We love Hale Pau Hana located on Kamaole II beach. You won%26#39;t find a three bedroom unit there but you could do a two bed/two bath with a sleeper sofa and be just fine. Check hphresort for units and rates.

The beach is great for snorkeling, swimming and boarding. One of the best and definately one of our favorites. All the units are oceanfront, there is a small hula show once a week on the grounds. You can walk to restaurants and shops. There is a great beach just down the road for your kids to lean to surf.

there is a small hula show once a week on the grounds. %26gt;%26gt;

everything about hph is true as posted except that the tues nite hula show and music has been discontinued

I have been to Maui several times in October and it is a wonderful time to be there. The weather has been great each time and Fall is considered low season so it is not crowded. Each time we have rented from owners of the Marriott and/or the Westin timeshares. I have seen several 2 bedroom units at each property between 285-400 per night. There are so many out there right now that even if the price is more than you want to pay you can always make an offer. I have never paid asking price or used the actual dates offered. The best places I have found to rent are Redweek.com (you have to join to see ads $10-15 per year) or Myresortnetwork.com which is free. I have been renting from owners for years and we are going back to the Marriott in April. Be advised the Marriott%26#39;s older building is a converted hotel which does not have a full kitchen but a kitchenette. It does have a small refrigerator, microwave, sink, dishwasher and dining table. The 2 bedroom units have 3 bathrooms (tub/shower combo) and you will have 2 mini kitchenettes and 2 lanais. The newly build towers are condos with a full kitchen and washer/dryer in the 2 bedroom units however the asking price for these units if off the charts 500-900 per night. That is a lot of nice dinners out! I have never had an issue with the converted units they were just great. I do not go to Hawaii to cook. The Marriott%26#39;s main pool is great and with the new towers there are 2 additional pools. They also have a couple of restaurants on property. The Marriott is also on the Kaanapali beach walkway that goes from the Hyatt resort to the Sheraton with Whaler%26#39;s Village in between so lot%26#39;s of activity for teens. The Westin Villas are lovely timeshare condos with a full kitchen and separate tub and shower in the bathroom with a washer and dryer in the unit and if you get a 2 bedroom you will also have a mini kitchenette in the smaller ';lockoff'; and another washer and dryer! They also have a couple of restaurants on property. The Westin is further North and not on the beach walkway but the beach is very nice in front of this property. The snorkeling is very good. My preferred choice is still the Marriott. I just love strolling the walkway and stopping to have a drink a pupus at one of the resorts or restaurants at Whalers Village. I hope you find the perfect place for your vacation!

Boy, there are a lot of differences in places to rent. After viewing the available rentals we have decided to up our housing budget and cut back on other expenses for the next 9 months. That and we figure if we are going to do this, we should have a place that really feels like vacation. I have found several condos in the Makena Surf complex. I think that is the name...

Anyone have any experience with the condos? Are they within walking distance to many restaurants/shops? They push the housing cost up to around $450+ a night but they sure look like they are what we are looking for and seem to have a considerable amount of room.

Thanks for the help!
