Beaches with lifeguards?

We are going to Maui with friends who have an 8 year-old daughter. She loves to swim and is a good swimmer, but her mom prefers to stay at a beach with a lifeguard. The guidebook Maui Revealed lists beaches with lifeguards--Baldwin Beach, D.T. Fleming, Kamaole I, II, III, to name a few, but in my recollection, some of these were beaches with larger waves. (maybe they post lifeguards at the beaches where people are more likely to get in trouble?). We were considering the Mahana/Maui Kai (North Kahekili/Airport Beach) area, or other west Maui accomodations, but have not ruled out south maui as our base. Any suggestions for condo accomodations on a safe beach, preferably with lifeguards? (a nice pool would also be a bonus!)

Beaches with lifeguards?

DT Flemming has awesome lifeguards, friendly and funny. Flemming can be totaly flat or very gnarly. Depends on time of year and time of day. You haven%26#39;t said when you are going. No lifeguards on Airport beach but a really wonderful area for kids. Just make sure they know to NEVER turn their back to the ocean. The condos you list are great...just have to watch your own kids in the water!

Beaches with lifeguards?

We will be there in early April. There will be four of us adults keeping a close eye on one 8 year-old, but her mom would feel more at ease knowing that a lifeguard is nearby just in case. Thanks for the feedback!

We went to a lifeguard-manned beach this summer thinking that it would be safer than one without a lifeguard. We visited Kamaole Beach in Kihei this summer. I was surprised, though, to see yellow flags because of the shorebreak. DH, DD and DS played in the waves but I was nervous watching them. The lifeguard told me that they have had a lot of neck injuries there because of the shorebreak. I know that ocean conditions vary and maybe we just picked a bad day or time of day to visit Kamaole Beach.

We experienced very good conditions at Ulua Beach in Wailea. We went early in the morning. No lifeguards there but the water was calm and the snorkeling along the coral reef is very good.

Here%26#39;s the lifeguard site for Hawaii. I would think it only lists those with lifeguards. It does show current conditions. http://oceansafety.soest.hawaii.edu/index.asp

D%26#39;oh. Looked closer and they have a section listing all the guearded beaches in Hawaii. oceansafety.soest.hawaii.edu/beachlist.asp

The beache%26#39;s with lifeguards are the ones you have to watch out for. They have either nasty shorebreaks or currents. The exception to that would be Makena Beach aka Big Beach. It%26#39;s the most dangerous on the island but has no lifeguard. They have been planning on putting them in there but the county and state have been arguing about who will pay for it.

If you are coming in the spring or summer months the safest beach for children and adults alike is Kapalua Bay. It does have some days in the winter that it can be very rough.

Ulua or Maluaka in south Maui are safe most of the time, but then again it depends on time of year and ocean conditions at the time!!

You will not find lifeguards around major hotels or condo%26#39;s. The reason they are at the Kamaole Beaches is because they are county parks.

The earlier in the day you go, the calmer the water will be.

There is a little beach next to the Whale Sanctuary in N. Kihei that was once a fish pond. There is a wall that takes care of most of the shore break, and the water was quite calm. I noticed lots of locals there with their little ones swimming. Not the greatest beach on the island, but one of the calmer looking ones that I saw. However, there is no lifeguard.

The Kamaole beaches are our favorite. Less rough than DT and the weather is much more reliable. Morning is always better, the wind tends to pick up around 11:00am.

We stay at Hale Pau Hana located on Kamaole II. All units are oceanfront. The resort is great for families and you can view unit interiors online at their website. The pool isn%26#39;t huge or fancy but it is oceanside and kids seem to love it. They have a small hula show on the grounds every Tuesday night. We love to bring our drinks out and watch it. I posted some pictures here on TA on their website. The beach is great for kids.

Mamma0223, just WHAT do you mean by awesome lifeguards? :)

I agree with the comments about the Kam beaches. (I ain%26#39;t gonna rescue nobody! I got a tan to work on!)

What Mahjerie is talking about is, Koieie, an actual ancient fish pond. There is a group that is in the process of restoring it. They will be there on Jan. 10, 8am-11am if you are interested in learning about the ancient Hawaiian culture and helping to restore this wonderful piece of Maui. For more info go to: mauifishpond.com It%26#39;s also a nice place to snorkel, I%26#39;be seen lots of fish and turtles. Just remember to respect where you are.
