should we go to Hana?

We are going to Maui in March.

Will arrive OGG around 8pm or 9pm, plan to stay close to the airport for the night.

Next day and after will stay at Wailea for 2 nights.

Then, 3 nights at Mahana.

I am debating with myself, should we take a day trip to Hana the morning after we arrive OGG, before we drive to Wailea. I mean, the hotel might not let us check in until 3pm anyway and we might get up very early due to the jet lag.

Plus, I would feel too lazy to drive to Hana once we are on the other side of the island.

But I am afraid a day trip to Hana then drive to Wailea is too much to do in a day.

What do you think?

should we go to Hana?

My husband and I disliked that drive very much. And, to us Hana wasn%26#39;t worth it. But, I guess all should try it once!

I say go on a rested day in the morning. It%26#39;s a long, very harrowing ride, so you should be at your best as far as alertness!

should we go to Hana?

Sounds like a lot of jumping around to me! I wouldn%26#39;t do the drive with all of my bags either. I am curious why you are staying near OGG the first night? There are no nice hotels there and you are only a 20 minute drive from Wailea. Waking up at a nice resort in Wailea will be lovely. Checking in and out another day, with chew up unncecessary time (IMHO).

It%26#39;s not the destination, but the journey. Those who like lush tropical vegetation, sea cliffs and a spectacular view of the ocean love this drive. Also most of the really beautiful waterfalls are beyond Hana. I%26#39;m not sure why you are staying in Kahului either. Wailea is a really easy 30 min. or less drive from the airport. You will have to go through Kahului to get back to Wailea after your Hana Hwy. trip, so getting to Wailea is not much of a problem.

The only thing I would be concerned about would be your luggage in the car. If it is concealed in the trunk and you don%26#39;t get anything out of it during your ride you should be fine.

Do this drive during your Wailea stay. I really don%26#39;t think you will regret it!!

I agree with previous posters - skip the stay close to the airport and drive to Wailea after arriving - it%26#39;s an easy, well marked drive that won%26#39;t take long at all.

Definitely go to Hana. Many people miss out on so many of the stops along the way. There isn%26#39;t a whole lot to see in Hana. However, the drive to Hana and past Hana is beautiful. Be sure to get one of the CDs with stop info or you can buy a book (or map). Many of the little side roads make the trip.

We%26#39;ve been to Maui 8 times and have done the RTH every single trip and will do so again next time. It%26#39;s always a highlight of our trip. Just keep in mind that the RTH is a full day trip to fully appreciate all there is to see so if you go, leave early in the morning.

Aloha

because last time we were in Maui, for some reason, it took us a long time to drive from OGG to Lahaina. I mean, like, hours.

We will leave Houston very early in the morning (2 stop over in the middle). I am worried by the time we arrived OGG and pick up our car, we will be too exhausted too handle getting lost in Maui in the middle of night.

From the map, distances from OGG to Lahaina, and from OGG to Wailea are similar.

??

Hi, Im CLs husband. I just want to fill in a few things. First, getting to Maui from Houston will take us 20 hours from our door to OGG with a 3.7 year old boy. Chances are we don%26#39;t really get to sleep much, as that was our experience when we flew to and from China.

Second is that the drive from OGG to our destinations look like short trips but based on my experience take over an hour and more like two since you have to drive around the coast. This is the only reason I can think to do the trip, get it over with and do it at night since there is very little.

Next is this is a vacation where we don%26#39;t have obligations (never happens), no inlaws, no relatives, no guests so it would be nice just to chill.

Oh, CL thinks it sounds like we had a fight, but we didn%26#39;t. I just was telling her that she needs to explain how brutal our flight is going to be. Last time our kid had to pee during final decent, that was a test for the crew, they were divided on whether little CL should go to the bathroom or pee all over himself.....

The drive to Hana was one of the highlites of our trip last August. It was not a harrowing drive at all unless you drive like a maniac. You can do the drive from Paia to Hana in about an hour if you don%26#39;t make any stops.

We stayed in Hana for 3 nights and it was such a relaxing visit. Not a lot of excitement if that is what you are looking for. But there are some beautiful beaches, and hiking trails.

Here%26#39;s a nice compromise. You%26#39;ll miss quite a bit but will get a taste of the infamous %26#39;Road to Hana%26#39;. Start down the road the next morning and stop at the Garden of Eden ( mauigardenofeden.com ). If you fell like more continue to the Kaenae Peninsula. It%26#39;s absolutely beautiful and about halfway to Hana. Then turn around and go to Wailea.

Here%26#39;s my review from back in October --

Nice Houston Family:

I would try to stay in Wailea for 3 days and Mahana for three. (Actually, I%26#39;d spend the whole trip in one place!) Drive to Wailea from the airport ... 45 minutes? You shouldn%26#39;t have any commuter traffic. Actually, OGG to Lahaina is about 45 minutes/hour. There must have been road construction, an accident or fire the last time you visited.

Another option -- take a SHUTTLE to your Wailea hotel after you land, and pick up a car in Wailea that you can return to the airport. That way you don%26#39;t have to drive yourself to Wailea after your long flight ... and you don%26#39;t have to hassle with a one night in Kahului. I don%26#39;t even know where I would recommend that you stay.

There is no rule that says you have to go all the way to Hana. So go as far as you like and turn around. Dedicate a day to it ... and stop at Mama%26#39;s for lunch or explore Paia and Makawao ... other upcountry sites. Break up the day. Your young one may not want to be strapped in to a car seat all the way to Hana! Get a good map of the area, and in the light of day, you%26#39;ll see that the drive from Wailea to the start of the Road to Hana is really not that far.
