Hi everyone. Here in Kauai and having a wonderful time. Yesterday we explored, stopped at various beaches, and finally found ourselves on Ha%26#39;ena Beach which was gorgeous and actually swimmable (the waves at others seemed like death traps).
So my question: can anyone recommend another beach not so far north similar to this? Less touristy, somewhat intimate, good for swimming. Poipu seemed very congested (for snorkeling it did seem the place to be). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It%26#39;s not QUITE as far north, but I like Hanalei bay. If it%26#39;s not too rough, I like Pine Trees (at He%26#39;e rd), and if it%26#39;s rougher, I like the pier.

You might try Anini beach, which is generally well protected by the reef. Shallow, clear, beautiful, snorkeling is so-so as far as fish go, but it is a great beach, and beach park.
It is on the north shore, not far past the kiluea light house. Look it up in your ultimate kauai guide book, for directions and map. Photo pg: 102
Info Pg 103....Map pg 47.
This is a beautiful beach, as you will see.
You will have a fun time here, and although there will be other people, it never has seemed crowded to us.
Nice bbq%26#39;s, and picnic tables, showers, restroom, that I believe Sly Stalone had built, lovely sand beach, lots of grass and trees, and totally pleasant.
Remain clear of the pass, but that still gives you lots and lots of area to swim, snorkel and play.
Also, you can check the UKG,for the phone number if you would like a wind surfing lesson. You book it ahead of time by phone. The lady instructor meets you there.
Always, always check out the conditions, we do have a high surf warning today-sunday, so please refer to kauai explorer beach and surf report on your computer.
With all the weather reports of a monster frontal system, we did not hear a thing last night, and it is now near maui.
We have blue skies, at 09:30, and hope to get out for some fresh air and a short hike.
Please use good sense, and water skills, and proper snorkeling procedures, and water safety practices.
Have fun
Denny
I second Hanalei Bay. For some strange reason people shoot right past Hanalei in search of the hidden, out of the way, harder to get to beaches. Hanalei is none of that but it is a gem for swimming. Huge expanse of sand and a long curved bay. Depending on conditions you can usually walk out quite far on sand bars. There are actually 4 sections to Hanalei Bay. We prefer the second one, called Pavilions Beach Park. There are showers, restrooms there. It%26#39;s just one parking section down from Black Pot Beach, which is closest to the Princeville Hotel. When you get into the town of Hanalei, turn right immediately after Ching Young Village. When you get to Weke Road, about 2 streets down only, turn right again. A little up the road you%26#39;ll see the beach house and small parking lot on your left.
I was one of those who ignored the beaches at Hanalei Bay, for whatever reason. When we finally stopped to check it out, about 10 years ago, we were hooked. Nowhere near a private setting but the bay is so huge , people are spread out far apart.
Kalihiwai is one of our favorites. Gorgeous spot, never crowded in our experience. It and Anini are top of our list, depending on conditions of course.
Vesparry, I think what everyone is saying is that the best snorkeling and scenery is on the north side of the island, about a 2 hour drive from you. We stayed on Poipu for several days recently and saw two crowded and compacted snorkeling areas there. There is not a large selection of good snorkeling spots near Poipu, we found. The least crowded area we saw was at Poipu Beach State Park, near you on the other side of the Marriott.
The best snorkeling area on Kauai we found was at Tunnels Beach on the north side and, combined with the other stunning beaches nearby, is well worth the drive, if you leave early before traffic on the highway. At Tunnels, there is awesome for snorkeling even in the winter. We did, however, run across Lydgate Beach, just north of Lihue that has some nice snorkeling spots in a protected area that is part of a state park and not crowded.
I hope this helps.
Aloha!
Richard
Everyone gets scared off by people saying the North Shore beaches are no good during the winter, but I am here and it%26#39;s just not true. I was at Hanalei Bay yesterday and though the waves past the reef where the surfers go were about 6 feet, the bay itself was fine. I didn%26#39;t swim but I saw many people swimming, boogie boarding and there was a kids surfing competition going on down towards Pine Trees. Across the road from the entrance to the pier is a guy who will teach you to surf.
I am not saying go jump in the water any time and under any condition. I am saying don%26#39;t think the ocean conditions are off limits from December to May on the NS. Each day is different. Tomorrow you might not be able to explore at Tunnels but Wednesday might be perfect.
Anini is usually calm and a beautiful, secluded spot. Drive to the end of the road for the most seclusion. Of course now that we keep telling people that, it will be the more overrun with tourists.
