Kauai in April...North vs. South...Help me choose a condo!

Kiahuna Plantation has several 1 BR condos available for that week on VRBO, mostly without views, and I can%26#39;t really tell how long the walk is to the beach or if you can hear the ocean at all from the condo.

Kuhio Shores 1 BR condos on VRBO and Summit Pacific, most with great views, and it looks to be right on the shore, but no sandy beach within a short walk, correct?

Nihi Kai Villas look great, but no 1 BR%26#39;s are available for our dates.

Poipu Kai and Waikomo Stream both have 1 BR%26#39;s available on VRBO or Parrish at very desirable rates, but I can%26#39;t tell where they are in relation to the beaches.

I%26#39;m also seriously considering Hanalei Bay Resort on the North Shore based on great reviews. Unit 1305 looks nice and is available that week on Summit Pacific at a good price. I guess that area can be more cloudy or rainy than Poipu, but also quieter and less crowded? And I know some of you have warned me that the ocean conditions on the North Shore may not be conducive to snorkeling in April. Are there still good restaurants, etc. nearby or should we just stick to Poipu?

I know I%26#39;m expecting a lot (comfortable condo within easy walk of beach and snorkeling, tranquil, beautiful setting, for less than $1200/week)! Thanks again for any information you can offer.

You are asking about weather and all I can say about Kauai is, it depends! It can be sunny and warm in Princeville and raining in Poipu. Less crowded? Not necessarily. I%26#39;ve seen large crowds in Hanalei as well as Poipu. Ocean conditions, again, it depends.

This website will give you some ocean trends on Kauai:

p.s. PM ';jebett'; regarding Hanalei Bay Resort. She knows the complex quite well.

Oh, and Waikomo Streams Villas:

Waikomo Streams Villas is about 1/2 mile NW from Baby%26#39;s Beach and a little over 1 mile NE from Poipu Beach, as the crow flies. It%26#39;s also alittle less than 1 mile from the beach in front of Kiahuna Plantation.

Yes PM about 1305.

I am off to the airport to go to Kauai but I will read my emails tonight when I get in.

In April the NS is generally great with light showers.

I love Kuhio Shores and know the units well (most of them) so PM your dates and I will let you know which are open and if they are nice or not.Small beach next door, no pool, but outstanding views. the biggest complaint from people is the sound of the waves crashing at night on the shore. Nice complaint if you ask me. I would choose KS over the others mentioned on the SS.

Aloha!

Martik, thanks so much! Those aerial views really help, and I%26#39;m learning a lot from the Kauai Explorer website. I see what you mean about April being a transition month! We%26#39;ll just have to check conditions daily.

Explorer,

Bear in mind that a non-ocean view at Kiahuna Plantation still usually has a terrifc garden view. The grounds are wonderful! And, although there is tremendous feel f spaciusness there, no unit is very far from the cean. We have never stayed ocean view and still find Kiahuna to be heaven. I mean, seriously, even the parking areas are pretty darn terrific! So, the short walk down to the beach is in no penance, believe me. It is a great location.

You can hear the ocean on calm nights throughout the complex, otherwise you will hear the movement of the leaves from the abundance of trees on the property. Very peaceful and tranquil. End units are particularly desireable.

FYI

Kihauna%26#39;s pool is across the main road if you care.

We are visiting our first time in August so I need all the help I can get too in picking the perfect place to sleep on the beach!!

We are staying at Kiahuna Plantation this year after staying at a couple other condos in Poipu. We walked the grounds while we there and it was beautiful. I can hardly wait.

We spent 4 nights each at Hanalei Bay Resort and Kuhio Shores last April and weather was quite similar in both places ... lots of sunshine, a few clouds and the occasional shower.

We loved the tranquility and spectacular scenery of the North Shore and regretted not staying for the full length of time at Hanalei Bay Resort. We liked driving to various beaches and found some beautiful (and safe) ones, but also ones that were quite dangerous ... be sure to read the signs and have a guide book that provides details on how safe or dangerous each beach is.

Kuhio Shores has a small beach next door (Lawai Beach). The snorkeling is good there, but the beach is narrow, access to the water is tricky with the rocks and the beach is next to the road ... good for snorkeling, but not for a relaxing afternoon at the beach and playing in the waves. However, it%26#39;s a quick drive from Kuhio Shores to Kiahuna beach ... and well worth going because Kiahuna beach is lovely. There is a small public parking lot (free) for Kiahuna beach.

I don%26#39;t think you can go wrong with either the north or south shore .... stay at one this time, take a drive to the other shore to explore for a day, and then you%26#39;ll know where you%26#39;ll want to stay next time ... because for sure there will be a next time!
