we are staying at the royal kahana in february and i am wondering about the ability to find some kind of shade cover around the pools. I have a daughter who wants to sit around the pool with us but has very sensitive skin. we are used to Mexico where they have cabanas everywhere. Can we bring an umbrella to set up around her or it that not allowed in pool areas?? We don%26#39;t want to have to spend extra money to get shaded chairs ( which i heard can be rented at quite a price) Any help appreciated.
shade in maui
I would check with your rental agent to see if the complex will allow an umbrella in the pool area. You can always use one at the beach.
shade in maui
we stay at the RK every time we go to Maui, there are ample shady areas around the pool, with a nice breeze blowing through as well. When our son was a baby, we would often sit out there in the shade, while he napped beside us in his little travel crib.
and the shade doesn%26#39;t cost extra :)
Do check with your lodgings direct to find out about the umrellas.
Other suggestions: purchase a rashguard with SPF, a wide brimmed hat, and follow the Aussie rule (Slip, Slap, Slop - forgive me if I have it twisted - Slip on a shirt, slap on a hat and slop on the sunblock)
Shade generally is readily available in much of Maui - I also have issues with too much sun and after ten years in AZ desert am good at finding shade where there is none.
Avoid the beach and pool between eleven and three - especially noon to two, the best time to find indoor activities or a big shade area
there are also lots of patio tables with umbrellas at and around the pool area
great place to sit back with a nice cool drink after playing/exploring/shopping all day :)
Also, buy your daughter some of the cute sun-protective clothing:

The rash guard and bottoms are very comfortable and really work well. Lots of kids wear them because they are sort of surfer-cool. They have great products and will give you and her an extra degree of comfort and sun protection.
Especially important for anytime she is actually IN the water, as the sun%26#39;s rays can cause sunburn for a couple of inches underwater. Spoken as the expert in getting sunburned back and back of legs from snorkeling.
Thanks for all the info!!!
The Neutrogena spf70 with helioplex works great for those times when she wants a little sun. Dermatologist recommended.
