How busy this weekend?

Hello all,

I have a last minute opportunity to visit the Big Island (first time in Hawaii from Australia) this coming weekend (10-13 Jan)...can anyone tell me how busy things are likely to be at this time of the year? - can I turn up and just find accommodation where I want or will it be necessary to book everything in advance?

The plan is the Volcanoes for a day or so and the Kona side for the remainder - don%26#39;t need anything special in terms of accommodation but appreciate your advice as ever.

Regards

Things are not busy here, BUT

you should never turn up and then book as once you%26#39;re on island YOU are at the disadvantage, as you are without a roof for the night.

Book before you leave and bargain hard.

there will be no problem....except for a short stay witn no reservations...you will have to pay top dollar for cars, hotels.

Suggest Royal Kona they have specials.

If you show up without a reservation expect to pay the Max price..... and dont forget to tip

As of right now, the weather forecast for the Volcano Village and Kalapana lava viewing looks good for Saturday, but on Sunday the wind will be from the south which sometimes closes the viewing area.

Also thunderstorms Sunday.

If you can%26#39;t get there to do he park on Saturday, you might want to do it at the end of the trip.

Kona side will be nice, I agree that the Royal Kona Resort would be a smart place to book a hotel room, you will be able to walk into town and be oceanfront.

Reflex, look online now and see what%26#39;s available. I booked the Royal Kona at $115 online. I followed up with a phone call and got a better rate of $99 including breakfast. Big, comfortable rooms and mine (maybe the whole wing?) was recently refurbished. This was over the holidays, but the hotel was still no more than 50% full. It%26#39;s a great time to go to Hawaii, I wish I could go back soon.

As always I am amazed at the helpful people on this forum - thanks so much (and yes I will remember to tip!!)

I am amazed ... I actually called this one, with a little help from NOAA.

The lava viewing did close today due to the wind direction.

also heavy rain and wind will remain for several days to return in 4 days...Weather in this season changes by the hour and day.. I would not want to be in the volcano or rain belts.....not wise.
