should we visit big island's volcano with a stay in Maui?

We are planning to visit Maui in Feb. My husband would like to see the volcano on the Big island. We will be visiting for about 8 nights. Should we do this? How could we go about this? How do we go about finding a way from Maui to the big island?

Forget it. You can come over to the Big Island for a day or two, but there is no guarantee the lava will be flowing. Save the VNP trip for your next visit to Hawaii when you spend all your time on the Big Island.

You can do it.....the air fare will be about $150 pp and there are no direct flghts to Hilo from Maui...you will have to fly through Honolulu. figure about 2 hours to get from Maui to Hilo. the same back.. figgure with checkin and security ti will take a good 3 hours total.... so that 6 hours gone

You will need to take a Helo tour to see lava...$200 pp 1.5 houurs and rent a car with gas $100. add $10 park entrance and $25 for food and drive to the park 2 hours rt and 3 hours in the park...min.

So thats a total of $835. for the day not counting parking at the airport. $435 without the Helo.

Timewise for a 3-4 hour visit in the park it will take you 12 hours of effort..... there will be no time to really see anything outside the park

It will be a lot of work to fly round trip to Hilo. Hawaiian Air would be the way to go. They do offer some one way non-stop at $69 per person each way IF your dates work with their fares. Check it out.

If you think this may be your only trip to the Islands it might be worth going over for one night. If you think you will be back I would suggest waiting and spending your next trip with us.

Dear Ohio: I agree, if your only trip ever to Islands schedule 2 nights in Volcano or Hilo. Alternately spend whole time on Big Island or VNP on your 2nd trip back to islands. VNP will take you one full day to see most of park. if so 1st evening maybe go down to Kalapana for lava viewing (assuming the right condtions): hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/images.html

Probably schedule Volcano at end or beginning of your trip to Maui. Limited direct flight from Maui should be booked way ahead of time. Aloha, ThedoreJay
