Molokai: Not for Young Kids

There are very limited activities for kids on Molokai. We went once when our child was 4 then again this year when she was 6. We ran out of things to do. There are no hotels in Molokai with safe swimming beaches. Hotel Molokai where we stayed has a pool next to bar so it is not a place to take the kids. The number one activity in Molokai is the trip to Kalaupapa but you must be 16 to go there. You must be 10 to rent horses at the ranch. The west side of Molokai is creepy with all the abandoned properties and I didn%26#39;t feel comfortable having my child there except in the Wind Factory which she loved. We went on a kayak trip, flew kites, went to Macadamia farm (closed this trip for Christmas) and went on the wagon ride on the coffee plantation. We only went to Molokai because we are members of Travel Advantage Network (TAN) which owns the Hotel Molokai otherwise I would not have made a point of going there with a young child when the other islands have so much more for young children to do.

I think it really all depends on what the children like to do but you are correct, unlike the other islands (except Lanai) there are ton of organized activites. Molokai is more for relaxing and exploring nature than it is for ripping around on an ATV, ziplining or going to a luau....thank goodness.

Perhaps if you would have done a little research on Molokai, you would have found this island isn%26#39;t for you. Molokai is unique like no other. It takes a very special person to understand this and I guarantee you....you are not it.

As someone who loves Molokai, I appreciate TravelHomemaker%26#39;s taking the time to inform those who may not know (or may have forgotten) that there are limited activities for kids on Molokai and another island might be a more appropriate destination.

I have to agree with you for the most part. We took our kids (ages 5 %26amp; 8) to Molokai in July 2007 for 8 days. We actually found a lot to do with the kids at The Lodge at Molokai Ranch but they closed in April 2008. I cannot imagine what else we could do on the island with the kids without the many activities offered at the activity desk and beach at the Molokai Ranch. I really wanted to take them to Kalaupapa but they have a minimum age so no luck.

We did go to Hotel Molokai several times and the bar was not a problem at all. At least in 2007, it was fine. We had lunch and dinner there 3 times and the restaurant is also part of the bar. We went on Friday to hear the elders sing and it was great! Not a problem then to be ';near'; the bar.

We were really looking forward to going back in July 2008 but with The Lodge closed, we decided to just hang out on Kauai a bit longer.
