Average cost of sunrise bike tour

Is $120 reasonable? I read that on the site of one of the companies, so I was wondering book if we decide to do that tour or wait until I arrive and look for discounts. Thoughts?

Average cost of sunrise bike tour

We did the sunrise bike down Haleakala two years ago. At that time they were still beginning at the top. I think they have since changed that. (?) I believe we paid around $110-120 pp. Usually you get the discount by booking on-line ahead of time (10% or so). Make sure you take some warm clothes!

$120 was the online price for booking ahead. $150 was the normal price. I thought it was expensive, so I was hoping others may know of additional discounts or would know if it was a good idea to wait until closer to the time of the activity to book.

bump

Most of the downhill bike companies are small outfits. I doubt in this economy you will get much of a discount that you have already. They will just limit the amount of tours they do. They, as far as I know, still aren%26#39;t allowed to start inside the National Park. If you do a morning tour, they will take you to the top to see the sunrise then back in the van and down the mountain to start your ride. Sorry I can%26#39;t give you any more info than this!!

Although these tours get alot of trendy buzz -- they are not for everyone. One of my friend referred to it as ';h*ll on a bicycle.'; It%26#39;s cold and can be very wet (rainy). And because you are watching the road ... you can%26#39;t gawk at the scenery on the way down (or stop at Kula Lodge for breakfast - yum!). And you will have been awakened VERY early in the morning.

Please do a search, as there are long posts on the pros and cons, safety and such.

I have to agree with BL. My husband and I had a not-so-good experience with the bike ride. Don%26#39;t get me wrong, they warn you. It was our fault for not listening! Although we are both fit, we are not ';bikers'; per se. I got on that bike and started zipping down Haleakala thinking ';what the h*ll was I thinking!'; Let%26#39;s just say we flew down Haleakala and I white-knuckled it the whole time down. (my husband was behind me laughing the whole way down) Many people have a great time, but I think it is just important to realize what it entails.

Have fun!

since the ride does not start at the top anymore I wonder if it is safer and less scary

After our ';harrowing'; (OK my term...I was driving) drive up Haleakala in the rain and fog I would never advise a bike tour. We met many ';tours'; coming down at us,and they do not cancel for rain, no happy faces and the faces of the children were just terrified. Had lunch near the bottom and our waiter told us he will not let his own (local) children ride their bikes on that road. Many folks have loved it I know but our experience was less then great. Just another opinion.

Hi T4Sy,

I like to see people have a good time but I have

seen that these bike rides have a habit of

getting a bit chaotic and I would strongly

recommend that you check your Insurance cover

on these ';Fun Trips.'; All the best K/b..

We went w/the Haleakala Bike Co.

Saw the sunrise, then they took us down to the park entrance (where all the tours start now), had a great trip w/them.

Bikes were very well maintained, this was an unguided trip, so we stopped whenever we wanted (including breakfast at Kula Lodge). Hooked up w/another couple our age and had a ball.

Price is much better than what you%26#39;ve found...

Key to this ride is paying attention to where you are going and taking breaks when you need them. Don%26#39;t do this if you haven%26#39;t ridden a bike in 20 yrs., it%26#39;s not the time to re-learn.

Have fun!
